Soproni KC claimed an 81-72 home victory over Szolnoki Olajbanyasz in Nemzeti Bajnokság I/A action on 18 October 2026, producing a controlled performance on both ends of the floor. The win was built on a strong first half and a composed closing quarter, with Sopron doing enough to keep a dangerous Szolnok side at arm's length throughout the second half.

Match overview

Sopron came out with intent, moving the ball quickly and attacking the basket with purpose. Szolnoki Olajbanyasz stayed within touching distance early, but the hosts' defensive pressure began to tell late in the first quarter. Sopron carried a four-point lead into the second period and gradually extended it before halftime.

Trailing 41-35 at the break, Szolnok made a run in the third quarter behind improved three-point shooting and more aggressive play in transition. They briefly reduced the deficit to four points, but Sopron responded with a steady diet of inside scoring and free throws to keep the visitors from completing the comeback.

How Sopron controlled the game

Soproni KC's offense was at its best when the ball entered the post and forced Szolnok to collapse. That inside threat opened up kick-out opportunities, and Sopron's guards knocked down enough perimeter shots to keep the defense honest. The hosts also won the rebounding battle, limiting Szolnok's second-chance points and giving themselves extra possessions in a game where neither team shot the ball at an elite rate.

Defensively, Sopron focused on disrupting Szolnok's half-court sets. They switched effectively on the perimeter, contested catch-and-shoot attempts, and forced the visitors into several late-clock situations. The home side's discipline was particularly evident in the fourth quarter, when they held Szolnok to 17 points while answering key baskets with calm possessions of their own.

Szolnok's fightback

Szolnoki Olajbanyasz showed why they remain a difficult opponent. Their third-quarter surge was powered by quick ball movement and a willingness to attack the rim. When their outside shot began to fall, the game threatened to swing. However, Szolnok could not sustain that momentum, and a handful of empty trips in the final five minutes proved costly.

The visitors' bench provided energy and scoring in spurts, but Sopron's defensive adjustments in the closing stretch forced Szolnok into tougher looks. Missed free throws and turnovers in the last three minutes ended any realistic hopes of a comeback.

Standout performers and tactical notes

Sopron's balanced scoring was a key feature of the win. The hosts had contributions from their starting frontcourt and bench, making it difficult for Szolnok to focus on stopping one player. Their guard play was steady, especially in the fourth quarter, when decision-making and shot selection mattered most.

The tactical difference came at the defensive end. Sopron's ability to protect the paint without completely abandoning the perimeter gave Szolnok problems all evening. On offense, the hosts' patience against the zone and their willingness to attack the offensive glass created the margin they needed.

What the result means

The victory gives Soproni KC a valuable home win in the Nemzeti Bajnokság I/A standings and reinforces their ability to close out tight games. For Szolnoki Olajbanyasz, the defeat is a reminder that road games in Hungary's top division demand consistency for all four quarters. Both sides will look to build on the lessons from this contest as the season progresses.
