Flamengo held off Defensor Sporting 65-63 in a defensive Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol clash on October 26, 2026, winning a game that was decided by half-court execution, rebounding, and one final stop.

This was not a game for high-volume scorers. Both teams prioritized defense, contested every drive, and made life difficult in the paint. The result was a low-scoring battle that stayed close from the opening tip to the final buzzer.

Flamengo took the first quarter 16-14, but Defensor responded with a 17-15 second period to send the teams into halftime tied at 31-31. The third quarter belonged to Flamengo by a narrow 18-16 margin, giving them a 49-47 lead heading into the final ten minutes.

• 2nd quarter: Flamengo 15, Defensor Sporting 17
• 3rd quarter: Flamengo 18, Defensor Sporting 16

The final quarter was a tense, defensive struggle. Neither team could build a meaningful cushion, and the game remained within one possession for most of the last five minutes.

Key moments

Defensor briefly took a 59-57 lead midway through the fourth quarter after a corner three-pointer, but Flamengo answered with a 6-0 run to reclaim control. A pair of free throws gave the Brazilian side a 65-61 cushion, and Defensor could only cut the deficit to two in the final seconds.

The last possession summed up the night. Defensor worked the ball into the paint, but Flamengo’s help defense arrived in time to force a difficult turnaround jumper that missed. The rebound secured the win for Flamengo.

Tactical story

Flamengo’s defense was the foundation of the win. They limited Defensor’s penetration, rotated well on the perimeter, and forced the Uruguayan side into several late-shot-clock attempts. Flamengo also controlled the defensive glass, preventing second-chance points in the closing minutes.

Defensor’s zone defense caused problems for Flamengo in the second quarter, but the hosts adjusted by attacking the high post and creating open looks from the wings. Neither team shot particularly well from three-point range, making the paint and free-throw line the decisive areas.

Standout players

Flamengo guard Lucas Ferreira led the scoring with 18 points and added seven rebounds, repeatedly finding gaps in Defensor’s defense. Forward Rafael Mendes contributed 13 points and nine rebounds, giving Flamengo a crucial physical presence inside.

For Defensor Sporting, Martín Silva scored 16 points and kept his team in the game with timely shot-making. Diego Acosta added 12 points, but Defensor’s late turnovers and missed free throws proved costly.

Season impact

The win gives Flamengo an important result in the Liga Sudamericana de Básquetbol group phase and could prove valuable in the head-to-head tiebreakers later in the competition. Defensor Sporting leave with a narrow loss but will take confidence from their defensive performance.

In a competition where group games are often decided by small margins, Flamengo’s ability to close out a tight fourth quarter stands out. Both teams will need to improve their offensive efficiency as the schedule progresses.
