The Fuerza Regia edged the Mineros de Zacatecas 87-84 in a hard-fought Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional (LNBP) matchup played on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at the Gimnasio Nuevo León Unido in Monterrey. In a game that stayed within two possessions for almost the entire fourth quarter, the home side leaned on disciplined half-court execution and timely defensive stops to close out a three-point win that could prove significant when the playoff seedings are sorted out later in the season.

Match Overview

The contest lived up to the billing between two of the most competitive programs in Mexican professional basketball. Fuerza Regia controlled the opening period, Mineros answered with their best stretch of the night in the second, and from there the two teams traded blows in a tense, physically demanding second half. Neither side ever led by more than nine points, and the final margin was the same three points that separated them for much of the closing stretch.

Shooting efficiency told much of the story. Fuerza Regia finished the night with a modest advantage from the field and converted 19 of 24 free throws, while Zacatecas left points at the line in the fourth quarter, an area that ultimately decided a game of this caliber.

Quarter-by-Quarter Scoring

• First quarter: Fuerza Regia 22 – Mineros de Zacatecas 19
• Second quarter: Fuerza Regia 21 – Mineros de Zacatecas 24
• Third quarter: Fuerza Regia 23 – Mineros de Zacatecas 20
• Fourth quarter: Fuerza Regia 21 – Mineros de Zacatecas 21
• Final: Fuerza Regia 87 – Mineros de Zacatecas 84

Zacatecas won the second quarter 24-19 to head into the locker room level, but Monterrey's response after halftime — a 23-point third period built on transition baskets and second-chance points — gave the hosts just enough cushion to survive the closing minutes.

Key Moments

The game turned on a 90-second stretch midway through the third quarter. Trailing by four, Fuerza Regia forced three consecutive Zacatecas turnovers, converting them into seven unanswered points to take a lead they would never fully surrender. Point guard Elías Cantú capped the run with a step-back three from the top of the arc that brought the home crowd to its feet.

Zacatecas had their chances late. Down three with under 30 seconds remaining, the visitors ran a well-designed set that produced an open look from the corner, but the shot rimmed out, and Fuerza Regia secured the rebound and iced the game at the line.

Tactical Story

Fuerza Regia's coaching staff made a clear decision to slow the tempo after Zacatecas' explosive second quarter, switching to a more conservative pick-and-roll coverage and daring the visitors to beat them from the perimeter. The adjustment worked: Mineros shot well from deep early but cooled considerably in the second half, and their half-court offense grew stagnant as the game wore on.

On the offensive end, Monterrey attacked the paint relentlessly, drawing fouls and generating 14 offensive rebounds. That interior pressure kept the game on their terms and forced Zacatecas into rotation decisions that left shooters open on the weak side.

Mineros, for their part, were at their best in the open floor. Their second-quarter surge came almost entirely from defensive stops converted into quick transition points, and when Fuerza Regia succeeded in slowing the pace, Zacatecas' scoring options narrowed considerably.

Standout Players

• Elías Cantú (Fuerza Regia): 24 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds, including the biggest shot of the night in the third quarter. He controlled tempo in the closing minutes and went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth.
• Andre Coello (Fuerza Regia): 18 points and 11 rebounds, a double-double built largely on work at the offensive glass. His put-back with 1:42 remaining gave the hosts their final three-point cushion.
• Iván Tovar (Fuerza Regia): 14 points off the bench, plus four steals, providing the energy spark that shifted momentum after halftime.
• Jaron Whitfield (Mineros de Zacatecas): A game-high 26 points with 9 rebounds. He was the best player on the floor for long stretches and kept his team within reach almost single-handedly.
• Pablo Núñez (Mineros de Zacatecas): 15 points and 8 assists, directing an offense that created quality looks but could not convert enough of them late.

Head-to-Head and Season Impact

The result adds another chapter to a rivalry that has become one of the most reliable sources of drama in the LNBP. Fuerza Regia and Mineros de Zacatecas have met repeatedly in important regular
