BC Steaua Bucuresti won the Bucharest derby with a 98-88 victory over Rapid Bucuresti in the Liga Nationala de Baschet Masculin. In a game that was as much about local bragging rights as it was about standings points, Steaua’s superior shooting and depth proved decisive in the final quarter.

The atmosphere was electric from the opening tip, with both sets of supporters filling the arena. Steaua controlled the game for long stretches, but Rapid kept it close with gritty defence and timely three-point shooting. The hosts finally pulled away in the fourth quarter behind a balanced offensive attack that saw five players score in double figures.

Match Overview

Steaua opened with a 25-22 first quarter, leaning on their inside-outside game. Rapid answered in the second, using a 10-2 run to briefly take the lead, but Steaua closed the half with a 49-45 advantage. The third quarter was a shootout: both teams traded baskets, and Steaua’s lead hovered around five points for most of the period.

The decisive stretch came early in the fourth. Steaua went on an 11-3 run, extending their lead to 85-71 and forcing Rapid into a timeout. Rapid made one last push, cutting the deficit to eight, but Steaua’s free-throw shooting and offensive rebounding sealed the win.

• Biggest lead: BC Steaua Bucuresti by 14 points
• Key run: An 11-3 Steaua burst to open the fourth quarter

Key Moments

The turning point came at the start of the fourth. With Steaua leading 74-68, their shooting guard hit back-to-back three-pointers, and their centre followed with a powerful dunk in traffic. Rapid’s coach called timeout, but the momentum had shifted, and Steaua’s lead never dropped below eight again.

Rapid’s best player, their American point guard, tried to keep his team alive with a series of drives and pull-up jumpers, but Steaua’s defensive rotations were quick enough to contest every look. A late steal and fast-break layup by Steaua’s small forward effectively ended the contest.

Tactical Story

Steaua’s offensive execution was excellent. They shot 52% from the field and 40% from three-point range, and they assisted on 24 of their 35 made baskets. Their big men set solid screens and rolled hard to the rim, forcing Rapid’s defence to collapse and opening up shooters on the perimeter. Defensively, Steaua switched between man-to-man and a 2-3 zone, disrupting Rapid’s rhythm in the second half.

Rapid Bucuresti played well for three quarters but ran out of gas in the fourth. They shot just 6-of-20 from beyond the arc and were out-rebounded 42-34. Their half-court offence became too predictable late, relying on isolation plays rather than ball movement.

Standout Performers

Steaua’s point guard led the way with 21 points and nine assists, controlling the tempo from start to finish. Their centre added 18 points and 14 rebounds, while the shooting guard chipped in 17 points on five three-pointers. Rapid’s point guard was the game’s top scorer with 27 points, and their power forward contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Steaua’s depth.

Standings and Season Impact

The derby win cements BC Steaua Bucuresti’s place near the top of the Liga Nationala de Baschet Masculin standings and gives them a crucial head-to-head advantage over their city rivals. Rapid Bucuresti will need to bounce back quickly, as the loss leaves them chasing the playoff pack. The return fixture in front of Rapid’s home crowd promises to be just as intense.
