LSU Kaunas (W) protected home court in the Lithuanian Women's Basketball League on 14 October 2026, defeating RSU/Merks Women 74-62 in a game the hosts controlled from the second quarter onward. A balanced offensive display and a decisive rebounding advantage carried Kaunas to a double-digit win in front of their home supporters.

Match Overview

The contest tipped off at 23:00 local time and quickly settled into a half-court battle, with both sides trading baskets early before LSU Kaunas imposed their tempo. The home team finished with four players in double figures and never allowed the visitors to string together the kind of scoring run needed to close the gap.

How the Game Was Won

LSU Kaunas built their advantage on the defensive end. By switching aggressively on screens and forcing RSU/Merks into contested mid-range attempts, the hosts limited their opponents to 62 points — well below the visitors' typical output. Kaunas also won the rebound battle comfortably, generating second-chance opportunities that repeatedly broke the game open whenever RSU/Merks threatened to make a run.

The second quarter proved decisive. After a competitive opening period, Kaunas outscored RSU/Merks 20-16 to take a 38-30 lead into the break, and they extended the margin to double digits midway through the third. From that point, the hosts managed the clock intelligently, attacking the basket when the shot clock wound down and drawing fouls to keep the scoreboard moving.

Key Moments

• End of Q1: A late three-pointer gave LSU Kaunas an 18-14 edge, their first real cushion of the night.
• Mid-Q2: An 8-0 run, sparked by back-to-back steals, pushed the lead to nine and forced a RSU/Merks timeout.
• Late Q3: A pair of offensive rebounds converted into points restored a 12-point gap after the visitors had cut it to seven.
• Final four minutes: Kaunas closed the game with disciplined free-throw shooting, denying any late comeback.

Standout Performances

Forward Gabija Petrauskaitė led the way for LSU Kaunas with a team-high scoring night, adding double-digit rebounds for a strong double-double. Point guard Ugnė Vaičiūnaitė dictated the tempo with steady ball distribution and several key baskets in transition. Off the bench, the Kaunas reserves contributed meaningful minutes, keeping the defensive intensity high while the starters rested.

For RSU/Merks Women, Anna Bērziņa was the most consistent offensive threat, carrying much of the scoring load, while Laima Ozoliņa battled hard on the boards. Ultimately, the visitors struggled with shooting efficiency and turnovers at critical moments, which proved too costly against a well-drilled opponent.

Season Impact and What's Next

The victory strengthens LSU Kaunas' position in the Lithuanian Women's Basketball League standings and reinforces their reputation as a tough team to beat at home. Winning by 12 points also gives them a useful head-to-head edge should tiebreakers come into play later in the season.

RSU/Merks Women will look to reset quickly, tightening their half-court offense and reducing live-ball turnovers. With the league schedule moving fast, both teams will take valuable lessons from this matchup as they continue their campaigns.
