Poitiers 90-73 Nantes: Dominant Second Half Seals Pro B Victory

Poitiers delivered a composed and increasingly commanding performance to defeat Nantes 90-73 in Ligue Nationale de Basket Pro B action, pulling away in the second half to secure a victory that was far more convincing than the early exchanges suggested. A 17-point winning margin, built on defensive pressure and efficient shot-making after the break, underlined Poitiers' control of a game that had been competitive at half-time.

The result is a meaningful one in the Pro B landscape, where home form so often determines whether a club pushes towards the promotion conversation or settles into mid-table consolidation.

Match Overview

• Final score: Poitiers 90, Nantes 73
• Margin: 17 points
• Competition: Ligue Nationale de Basket Pro B
• Pattern: Tight early, one-sided late

The opening quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish real separation. Nantes looked organised in the half court, moving the ball well and finding decent looks from the perimeter. Poitiers, for their part, were content to work the ball inside and draw fouls, keeping the scoreboard ticking from the free-throw line.

Where the Game Turned

The third quarter proved decisive. Poitiers came out of the locker room with noticeably more urgency, tightening their defensive rotation and forcing Nantes into difficult, late-clock shots. That defensive intensity translated directly into offence: steals and long rebounds became fast-break points, and the lead expanded quickly.

Nantes' response was fragmented. A couple of three-pointers briefly interrupted the run, but each Poitiers answer seemed to arrive with greater authority. By the midpoint of the third period the home side had established a double-digit cushion, and Nantes never seriously threatened to close it.

Why Poitiers Won

• Defensive adjustments: Poitiers increased their pressure on the ball handler in the second half, disrupting Nantes' pick-and-roll rhythm.
• Rebounding edge: Controlling the defensive glass limited second-chance points and fuelled the transition game.
• Balanced scoring: Points came from across the rotation, making Poitiers difficult to defend with a single adjustment.
• Free-throw discipline: Consistent conversion at the line kept Nantes from clawing back momentum during their better stretches.

Nantes will point to their shooting variance as a factor, and there is truth in that. But the deeper issue was structural: their offensive sets became predictable as the game wore on, and Poitiers read them comfortably.

Standout Performers

Poitiers' lead guards controlled the tempo beautifully, particularly in the third quarter when the game was decided. Their ability to break down the first line of defence and either finish or find the open shooter gave the home side an offensive versatility that Nantes could not match. Inside, Poitiers' big men did the unglamorous work — screening, sealing, and securing rebounds — that makes a 90-point night possible.

For Nantes, there were encouraging individual moments, particularly from their perimeter shooters in the first half, but nobody was able to sustain a run long enough to shift the momentum.

Pro B Season Impact

In the Pro B, where the schedule is long and the margins between playoff contenders are slim, home wins of this quality carry real weight. Poitiers add a comfortable victory and a healthy point differential to their record, while Nantes are left to reflect on a road performance that unravelled after half-time.

The message from this game is clear: Poitiers, when their defensive intensity is high, are a difficult team to beat on their own floor. Maintaining that level consistently will determine how high they climb.
