Athlete Celje Women's produced a commanding performance in the Liga Nova KBM Women, defeating Maribor Women 64-38 in Celje on October 17, 2026. The 26-point margin reflected Celje's control on both ends of the floor, as the home side set the tone early and never allowed Maribor to settle into a comfortable offensive rhythm. The result strengthens Celje's position among the league's front-runners and adds another convincing home win to their season record.

Match overview

From the opening quarter, Athlete Celje Women's looked like the sharper team. They moved the ball with purpose, attacked the basket decisively and used their defensive pressure to force Maribor into difficult shots. Celje built an early lead and managed the game well, never letting the visitors string together enough scoring to threaten a comeback.

Maribor Women competed hard, particularly on the defensive glass, but struggled to convert possessions into points. The visitors' half-court offense lacked fluency against Celje's compact defense, and several empty trips allowed the home side to steadily extend the advantage.

Key moments

The decisive stretch came in the first half, when Celje turned defensive stops into quick transition points. A series of steals and defensive rebounds led to layups and open perimeter looks, pushing the lead into double digits. Maribor called timeout to slow the tempo, but Celje maintained their intensity and kept the margin comfortable through halftime.

Any hopes of a Maribor run after the break were quickly erased. Celje opened the third quarter with a focused burst, dominating the defensive boards and converting second-chance opportunities. By the time the final quarter began, the home side had full control of the game and were able to rotate their bench without losing structure.

Tactical story

Celje's defensive approach was the foundation of the win. They guarded the paint well, closed out aggressively on shooters and forced Maribor into contested mid-range attempts. On offense, Celje played through the post when the opportunity presented itself and also found success with dribble penetration from the backcourt.

Maribor's best moments came when they slowed the game down and worked the ball inside, but those moments were too infrequent. The visitors also struggled at the free-throw line and gave up too many offensive rebounds, which allowed Celje to control the possession count.

Standout performers

Celje received a balanced scoring effort, with their guards controlling tempo and their forwards doing the dirty work on the boards. The home bench also contributed meaningful minutes, preserving the defensive standard and keeping the energy high in the fourth quarter. For Maribor, the effort remained visible until the final whistle, but the team lacked the offensive firepower to match Celje's depth.

League impact

The victory adds important momentum to Athlete Celje Women's campaign in the Liga Nova KBM Women. With results like this, Celje continue to look like a serious contender in the standings, combining home-court strength with a defense capable of frustrating opponents for long stretches. For Maribor Women, the focus will be on improving ball security and finding more consistent scoring options in the half-court offense as the season progresses.

The final score of 64-38 will be remembered as one of Celje's most complete defensive displays of the early season, and it gives the club a strong platform heading into its next league fixture.
