Spar Girona Women suffered an 89-83 home defeat to Mallorca W in Liga Femenina de Baloncesto action on Friday, October 9, 2026, as the visitors produced a composed fourth-quarter finish to leave Fontajau with a statement road win. Mallorca W trailed 65-63 going into the final period but outscored Girona 26-18 over the last ten minutes, turning a tight contest into a six-point victory.

The result gives Mallorca W an important early-season boost in Spain's top women's basketball league, while Spar Girona are left to rue a late scoring drought and a handful of costly turnovers. The 172 combined points made it one of the more entertaining matchups of the round, with both teams shooting well for long stretches and the lead changing hands multiple times.

Match Overview

From the opening tip, Mallorca W played with pace and aggression. The visitors attacked early in the shot clock, moved the ball side to side, and found open shooters against a Girona defense that struggled to close out on the perimeter. Girona stayed within touching distance thanks to their interior scoring and transition play, but they were never able to fully impose their preferred half-court rhythm.

Mallorca W led 25-22 after the first quarter and took a 45-41 advantage into halftime. Girona responded with their best stretch of the game in the third, using a 10-0 run to briefly take control. But the final quarter belonged to Mallorca W, who made the bigger plays on both ends when the game was on the line.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

• Second quarter: Mallorca W 20, Spar Girona 19 — Girona tightened defensively, but Mallorca's bench kept the offense flowing.

Key Moments

The turning point arrived midway through the fourth quarter. With Girona leading 75-72, Mallorca W forced back-to-back turnovers and converted them into five quick points. A corner three from the visiting shooting guard put Mallorca ahead for good, and a steal-and-layup sequence on the next possession stretched the margin to six.

Girona had chances to respond. They cut the deficit to 82-79 with just over two minutes remaining, but missed two open looks from beyond the arc on the following possessions. Mallorca W then went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final 90 seconds to seal the 89-83 win. The visitors' late-game execution stood in contrast to Girona's rushed shot selection down the stretch.

Tactical Story

Mallorca W won this game from the perimeter. They hit 12 three-pointers and finished with 18 assists, constantly forcing Girona's defense into long closeouts and second rotations. When Girona switched to a more aggressive hedge on ball screens, Mallorca's guards found the roll man or skipped the ball to the weak side. That ball movement created clean looks even as the pace slowed in the fourth quarter.

Spar Girona were the better rebounding team, finishing with a 38-34 edge on the glass, and they scored 40 points in the paint. But they committed 17 turnovers, and Mallorca W turned those mistakes into 22 points. Girona also shot just 6-of-20 from three-point range, making it difficult to match the visitors' efficiency from outside. In a game decided by six points, that perimeter gap was the difference.

Standout Performers

Mallorca W's backcourt controlled the game. Their point guard finished with 19 points and 7 assists, repeatedly breaking down Girona's defense in pick-and-roll situations. The shooting guard added 18 points, including five three-pointers, while the starting center posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The bench also provided a spark, contributing 21 points and helping Mallorca maintain their tempo when the starters rested.

For Spar Girona, the leading scorer finished with 22 points and 8 rebounds, attacking the rim with purpose throughout the night. Their point guard added 17 points and 6 assists, and the interior duo combined for 25 points in the paint. However, Girona's supporting cast struggled to find rhythm, and the team's late turnovers undid much of their third-quarter momentum.
