Gernika Bizkaia Women edged Leganes Women 83-79 in a hard-fought Liga Femenina de Baloncesto clash at Maloste, a result that underlined the Basque side's ability to close out tight games down the stretch. The hosts led for long stretches but had to survive a determined fourth-quarter comeback from a Leganes team that refused to go away, with the game only settled in the final minute.

Match Overview

The contest was played at a brisk tempo from the opening tip, with both teams happy to push the ball in transition and attack early in the shot clock. Gernika's interior presence gave them an early edge on the glass, while Leganes countered with quick ball movement and timely three-point shooting that kept the deficit manageable throughout the first half.

The hosts built their advantage through defensive pressure and second-chance points, turning a series of Leganes turnovers into easy baskets at the other end. By the interval, Gernika had established a narrow but deserved cushion, having controlled the rebounding battle and forced Leganes into contested shots late in possessions.

Quarter-by-Quarter Flow

• First quarter: A fast, open start with both teams trading baskets; Gernika's inside scoring gave them a slight edge.
• Second quarter: The hosts tightened up defensively and converted turnovers into points to open a working lead at the break.
• Third quarter: Leganes came out aggressively, knocking down perimeter shots to claw back into the game and silence the home crowd.
• Fourth quarter: A tense, possession-by-possession finish in which Gernika's composure from the free-throw line proved decisive.

Key Moments

The game's defining stretch came in the closing minutes. Leganes, trailing by a handful, hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the gap to a single possession and briefly threatened to steal the win on the road. Gernika responded with a composed offensive set, drawing a foul and converting at the line before forcing a contested miss at the other end.

A crucial offensive rebound with under a minute remaining allowed the hosts to run valuable time off the clock, and their late defensive rotations denied Leganes a clean look at a game-tying shot. The final margin of four points was a fair reflection of a match in which neither side ever fully broke clear.

Tactical Story

Gernika's game plan revolved around controlling the paint and dominating the boards, and that approach paid dividends over forty minutes. Their bigger line-ups punished Leganes on the offensive glass and generated the extra possessions that ultimately separated the teams. Defensively, they mixed man-to-man pressure with occasional zone looks to disrupt Leganes' rhythm in the half court.

Leganes, for their part, were at their best when playing with pace and spacing the floor. Their shooters stretched Gernika's defense and their guards attacked closeouts aggressively, which is what dragged them back into contention after a slow start. The visitors' issue was consistency: too many empty possessions in the second quarter and a handful of costly turnovers in crunch time left them chasing the game.

Standout Performers

Gernika's frontcourt duo set the tone on both ends, combining for a steady stream of points in the paint and controlling the defensive glass. Their perimeter players chipped in with timely shot-making and, crucially, steady free-throw shooting in the final two minutes.

For Leganes, the backcourt led the fightback, hitting tough shots off the dribble and creating opportunities in transition. Their effort on the defensive end in the third quarter turned a comfortable Gernika lead into a genuine contest, and their bench provided useful energy minutes that kept the rotation fresh.

Season Impact

The win is a valuable one for Gernika Bizkaia in the Liga Femenina de Baloncesto standings, adding a home victory against a direct rival and reinforcing their strong record at Maloste, one of the tougher venues in Spanish women's basketball. Protecting home court is essential in a league where the playoff race is typically decided by a handful of games.

For Leganes, the defeat is a narrow one that nonetheless offers encouragement: competing on the road against an established playoff side until the final possession suggests they can trouble higher-ranked opponents this season. Converting late-game execution and cutting down turnovers will be the priority as the campaign progresses.

What's Next

Gernika will look to carry the momentum of this result into their next fixture, with their rebounding dominance and late-game poise the obvious foundations to build on. Leganes return home aiming to turn competitive defeats into wins, and their shooting and pace will give
