Movistar Estudiantes left Zamora with an 80-73 road victory in Spain's Primera FEB, delivering a controlled, professional performance on the opening weekend of the 2026-27 campaign. The Madrid club, one of the most decorated names in Spanish basketball outside the ACB, used a decisive third quarter to break open a game that had been tight for twenty minutes, and then closed it out from the free-throw line in the final four minutes.

Match Overview

The match, played at the Pabellón Ángel Nieto in front of a loud home crowd, tipped off with the hosts playing exactly the way a promoted, hungry Primera FEB side should: aggressively, with quick ball movement and an early willingness to attack the rim. Zamora led briefly in the first quarter before Estudiantes settled into their half-court structure and began to punish mismatches inside.

How the Game Was Won

Estudiantes opened with a 22-18 first quarter built on efficient interior scoring and second-chance points. Zamora responded well in the second period, tightening their defensive rotations and forcing the visitors into contested mid-range attempts. A 20-19 quarter in Zamora's favour sent the teams into the locker rooms with the deficit trimmed to three, and the home bench was visibly energised.

The third quarter was the turning point. Estudiantes came out of the interval with a much more aggressive pick-and-roll attack, drew early fouls on Zamora's frontcourt, and rattled off a 12-2 run that stretched the lead into double digits. Zamora's offence stalled for nearly four minutes during that stretch, and by the time they scored again the game's momentum had shifted permanently.

Zamora never quit. A late 8-0 burst in the fourth quarter, sparked by two corner three-pointers, cut the margin to five with under three minutes to play, but Estudiantes answered with composed possessions and converted their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Standout Performances

Estudiantes' backcourt controlled the tempo throughout, combining for 34 points and 11 assists while committing only six turnovers between them. Their starting centre was a force on the glass, finishing with a double-double and altering several Zamora drives in the paint. Off the bench, a versatile forward provided a crucial scoring spark in the third quarter, hitting back-to-back jumpers that forced Zamora to abandon their zone defence.

For Zamora, the shooting guard was the clear bright spot, scoring a game-high 21 points with four three-pointers and repeatedly keeping his team within touching distance. Their power forward added 14 points and nine rebounds in a physical battle underneath, but the team's 15 turnovers proved costly against an opponent of this calibre.

Season Impact

The result gives Movistar Estudiantes an important early away win in a league where road victories are notoriously difficult to come by, and it reinforces their status as a leading candidate for promotion to the ACB. For Zamora, the performance — competitive for 36 minutes against one of the deepest rosters in the division — offers encouragement despite the defeat, and suggests they can be difficult to beat at home this season.

Both teams now turn to a busy October schedule, with Estudiantes expected to lean on their defensive identity and Zamora looking to convert strong stretches into full four-quarter performances.
