Toros del Valle held off a determined Paisas side to secure a 78-74 home victory in the Liga de Baloncesto on Saturday, October 17, 2026. In a game that remained tight deep into the fourth quarter, the hosts made the bigger plays on both ends down the stretch and protected their advantage at the free-throw line to close out a valuable win.

Match Overview

The morning tip-off produced a tense, physical contest rather than a free-flowing shootout. Toros del Valle established an early presence in the paint, using strong offensive rebounding and interior scoring to build a narrow 20-17 lead after the first quarter. Paisas responded with perimeter shooting and improved ball movement in the second period, but the home side still managed to take a 39-35 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter followed a similar pattern. Toros del Valle threatened to pull away several times, only for Paisas to answer with timely three-pointers and transition baskets. By the end of the period, the hosts led 58-55, setting up a fourth quarter in which every possession carried extra weight. Paisas briefly tied the game in the closing minutes, but Toros del Valle regained control with a composed finishing sequence.

How the Game Turned

The decisive stretch came in the final four minutes. With the score level and both teams struggling to find clean looks, Toros del Valle generated second-chance points through aggressive board work and then converted key free throws after Paisas was forced to foul. A late defensive stop sealed the result and prevented the visitors from setting up a final possession.

• Clutch perimeter shooting: Toros del Valle hit a timely three-pointer to break the late tie and shift momentum.
• Offensive rebounding: The hosts created extra possessions in the fourth quarter, turning them into crucial second-chance points.
• Free-throw discipline: Toros del Valle remained calm at the line in the final minute, denying Paisas any chance to complete a comeback.
• Late defensive stand: A contested shot and a secured rebound on the final defensive possession closed the door on the visitors.

Tactical Story

Toros del Valle’s game plan revolved around paint touches and physical rebounding. The hosts repeatedly attacked the basket, drawing help defenders and creating space for cutters and spot-up shooters. Their offensive rebounding was particularly important, especially in a game where neither team shot the ball with great efficiency for long stretches.

Paisas stayed competitive by spreading the floor and relying on guard penetration to collapse the defense. Their three-point shooting kept them within striking distance, and their activity in transition caused problems for the Toros in the second and third quarters. However, Paisas struggled to contain Toros del Valle on the defensive glass, and those extra possessions proved costly in a four-point game.

The tactical battle also came down to turnover management. Toros del Valle were steadier with the ball in the closing minutes, while Paisas were forced into rushed attempts after falling behind. The home side’s ability to slow the tempo and execute half-court offense late in the game was a major difference.

Standout Performers

Andrés Cárdenas led Toros del Valle with 22 points, nine rebounds and four assists, delivering several key baskets in the second half. Mateo Rivas added 15 points, including a crucial fourth-quarter three-pointer, while the Toros bench provided energy and defensive intensity during a demanding second quarter.

For Paisas, Juan Pablo Restrepo finished with 19 points and six rebounds, consistently keeping his team within reach. Santiago Mejía contributed 14 points and several important defensive plays, but the visitors ultimately lacked the final offensive surge needed to steal the game on the road.

Standings and Season Impact

The result gives Toros del Valle an important home win in the Liga de Baloncesto standings and reinforces their ability to close out tight games. In a league where home-court advantage and late-game execution often shape the playoff race, protecting a narrow lead against a direct competitor is a meaningful statement.

Paisas will take encouragement from their competitiveness but will rue the missed opportunities in the fourth quarter. The loss leaves them with little margin for error in the coming fixtures, especially with the Liga de Baloncesto table beginning to take shape. Both teams will now turn their attention to their next games, with Toros del Valle looking to build momentum and Paisas aiming to respond quickly.
