Pallacanestro Varese edged Pallacanestro Trieste 85–84 in a Lega Basket Serie A thriller, surviving a frantic final possession to claim a one-point victory on home soil. In a game that swung back and forth across all four quarters, the difference ultimately came down to a handful of free throws and one contested look at the buzzer.

Match Overview

Played in front of a packed and noisy home crowd, the contest lived up to its billing as one of the tighter fixtures of the early Serie A calendar. Neither side led by more than seven points at any stage, and the lead changed hands eleven times, with the score level on five separate occasions in the fourth quarter alone.

Varese's victory was built on a balanced scoring attack rather than a single dominant performance. Four players finished in double figures, and the team shot efficiently from the perimeter in the second half after a cold opening stretch. Trieste, meanwhile, will feel they let a road win slip away, having led by five with under six minutes remaining.

Quarter-by-Quarter Scoring

• First quarter: Varese 22–19 Trieste
• Second quarter: Varese 20–24 Trieste
• Third quarter: Varese 21–18 Trieste
• Fourth quarter: Varese 22–23 Trieste
• Final score: Pallacanestro Varese 85–84 Pallacanestro Trieste

Key Moments

The first half belonged to Trieste's half-court execution. The visitors moved the ball patiently, punished Varese's switches inside, and took a 43–42 lead into the locker room after a late three-pointer from the top of the arc.

Varese responded after the break with their best defensive stretch of the night, forcing four turnovers in a five-minute window during the third quarter and converting them into transition points. A 9–0 run late in the period turned a four-point deficit into a five-point cushion heading into the final frame.

The finish was chaotic. Trieste clawed back with back-to-back three-pointers, briefly taking the lead with just over a minute to play. Varese answered through a tough drive and a pair of made free throws, before a final defensive stand forced Trieste into a heavily contested mid-range attempt that rimmed out as the buzzer sounded.

Tactical Story

Varese's game plan revolved around pace and shot volume, a philosophy the club has leaned into for years. They pushed the ball off every defensive rebound and generated a high number of three-point attempts, even when the early ones were not falling. The willingness to keep shooting proved decisive once the looks started dropping in the second half.

Trieste, by contrast, were more methodical. They attacked the paint, drew contact, and generated a steady stream of free throws, which kept them in front for long stretches. The problem was defensive rebounding: Varese grabbed a meaningful number of second-chance opportunities in the fourth quarter, and those extra possessions made the difference in a one-point game.

Standout Performers

• Varese guard play: A composed floor game with timely shot-making, particularly in the third-quarter run that flipped the momentum.
• Varese frontcourt: Physical on the glass, with several crucial offensive rebounds in the closing minutes.
• Trieste wings: The visitors' best source of offense, combining for a high percentage from beyond the arc.
• Trieste interior: Efficient around the rim and aggressive getting to the free-throw line.

What It Means for the Season

The win gives Varese an important early-season result in a league where home form is historically decisive, and it keeps them moving in the right direction in the Serie A standings. For Trieste, it is a frustrating near-miss on the road — the kind of result that can sting in April when playoff seeding is decided by a game or two.

Both teams now turn to the next round of the Serie A schedule, with Varese looking to build on a narrow but confidence-boosting victory and Trieste aiming to convert close losses into wins away from home.
