Derthona Basket 101-93 Tezenis Verona — Derthona Basket opened its Lega Basket Serie A campaign with a statement, pulling away in the second half to beat Tezenis Verona 101-93 in front of a loud home crowd. The win moves the Tortona club into the early-season upper half of the Serie A standings, while Verona leave with a respectable road performance but no reward for their offensive effort.

Match Overview

From the opening tip, this was a game defined by pace. Derthona wanted to run, and Verona — a team that thrives when it can get into a rhythm from the perimeter — were happy to trade baskets early. The first quarter set the tone for the night: 26-22 to the hosts, with both teams shooting comfortably above 45% from the field and getting into the bonus early thanks to aggressive drives to the rim.

The second period was where Derthona built the cushion that ultimately decided the game. A 12-3 run midway through the quarter, sparked by back-to-back transition buckets, pushed the lead into double digits. Verona steadied themselves before the break, but went into the locker room trailing 50-42 after a half in which the home side controlled the defensive glass and limited second-chance points.

Quarter-by-Quarter Scoring

• First quarter: Derthona 26-22 Verona
• Second quarter: Derthona 24-20 Verona (Half-time: 50-42)
• Third quarter: Derthona 25-27 Verona (End of Q3: 75-69)
• Fourth quarter: Derthona 26-24 Verona (Final: 101-93)

Key Moments

Verona made their push in the third quarter, and for a few minutes it looked like the game might flip. A 9-0 run, built on two corner three-pointers and a steal-and-score in transition, cut the deficit from 14 to five and silenced the home support. Derthona's response was the most important sequence of the night: a patient possession that ended in an and-one at the rim, followed immediately by a defensive stop and a fast-break dunk that restored a double-digit advantage heading into the final quarter.

The closing five minutes belonged entirely to the hosts. Derthona went 10-of-12 from the free-throw line down the stretch, refused to settle for contested mid-range looks, and forced Verona into two costly shot-clock violations when the game was still within reach at 90-84. In a contest that featured 194 combined points, it was the defensive end that ultimately separated the teams.

Tactical Story of the Game

Derthona's game plan was built on pace and paint touches. The hosts attacked off the dribble early in possessions, drew help defenders, and then kicked out to shooters who had time and space to fire. That inside-out approach produced a balanced scoring line, with five players finishing in double figures — a hallmark of how this Derthona side wants to play under its up-tempo system.

Verona, by contrast, leaned on ball screens and three-point volume. When the shots fell, they were genuinely dangerous, and their third-quarter surge showed the ceiling of that approach. The problem was consistency across 40 minutes: too many empty possessions in the second quarter and a rebounding deficit that gave Derthona extra chances on the offensive end.

The decisive statistical edge came on the glass and at the line. Derthona won the rebounding battle and attempted significantly more free throws, a direct result of their willingness to attack the rim rather than settle. In a fast-paced game, those margins add up quickly — and a 101-point night is proof of it.

Standout Performers

• Jamal Whitfield (Derthona): The game's leading scorer, finishing with a game-high 24 points on efficient shooting, plus six assists. He controlled the tempo in the fourth quarter and repeatedly broke down Verona's perimeter defense off the bounce.
• Luca Bernardini (Derthona): A double-double inside with 17 points and 11 rebounds, including four on the offensive glass that extended possessions at critical moments.
• Devin Cartwright (Derthona): Added 15 points and was the primary defender on Verona's leading scorer during the decisive closing stretch.
• Kyle Merriweather (Verona): Carried the visitors with 22 points, including four three-pointers, and was the engine behind the third-quarter comeback attempt.
• Andrea Laganà (Verona): Chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds, giving Verona a reliable second option when the perimeter game stalled.
