Aquila Basket Trento edged Pallacanestro Varese 87-85 in a tense Lega Basket Serie A matchup on 18 October 2026, closing the game with a 24-point fourth quarter and a final defensive stand that denied Varese a tying basket at the buzzer.

It was a result built on late composure rather than outright dominance. Trento led for long stretches, surrendered the advantage in the third quarter, and then found just enough shot-making and free-throw accuracy in the final minutes to secure a valuable home win. The victory moves Trento to 3-1 early in the Serie A season, while Varese settles at 2-2 after a narrow road defeat.

Match overview

Trento opened with purpose, attacking the paint and generating second-chance opportunities through active offensive rebounding. A 22-18 first quarter gave the home side an early cushion, but Varese responded with a better second period, using perimeter shooting to stay within touching distance. Trento went into halftime ahead 43-41 after a competitive opening 20 minutes.

The third quarter flipped the momentum. Varese found rhythm from beyond the arc and outscored Trento 24-20, taking a 65-63 lead into the final period. That set up a fourth quarter in which every possession felt heavier than the last. Trento shot 8-of-14 from the field in the last 10 minutes and made six of eight free throws, enough to outscore Varese 24-20 and close out the two-point win.

Key moments

• Varese’s 9-0 run midway through the third quarter turned a five-point deficit into a four-point lead and briefly silenced the home crowd.
• Trento answered early in the fourth with an 8-2 burst, reclaiming the lead at 71-69 and forcing Varese into a timeout.
• With 14 seconds remaining, Trento’s guard knocked down two free throws to make it 87-85, leaving Varese one final possession.
• Varese created a contested three-pointer at the buzzer, but the attempt rimmed out, sealing Trento’s escape.

Tactical story

Trento’s advantage came inside. The home side scored 38 points in the paint and converted 14 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points, repeatedly punishing Varese’s smaller lineups. Varese countered with spacing and three-point volume, attempting 31 shots from beyond the arc and keeping the game close even when Trento controlled the glass.

The decisive adjustment came defensively. Trento switched more aggressively on perimeter screens in the fourth quarter, forcing Varese into late-clock isolations and contested jumpers. Varese won the turnover battle 15-12, but Trento’s late rebounding and free-throw discipline proved more important in a game separated by one possession.

Standout players

Trento’s frontcourt leader finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, repeatedly scoring over smaller defenders and setting the tone on the offensive glass. The starting point guard added 17 points and six assists, including four points in the final two minutes. Varese’s shooting guard kept his team in contention with 22 points, including four three-pointers, while the visiting center contributed 13 points and eight rebounds before fouling out late.

Season impact and table context

The win gives Trento a 3-1 record and reinforces its early-season credentials in the Lega Basket Serie A standings. For Varese, the loss is a frustrating one — the team was within a single basket of a road victory — but the performance still showed enough offensive balance to suggest it can compete in the upper half of the table.

The two-point margin could also matter in the head-to-head tiebreaker conversation later in the season, giving Trento an early edge in any direct comparison. Neither side has time to dwell on the result, with the Serie A schedule quickly moving on, but Trento will take confidence from winning a game it nearly let slip, while Varese will focus on late-game execution and defensive rebounding after another tight defeat.
