Dongguk University Tops Hanyang University 87-78 in Korean University Basketball League Clash

Dongguk University secured an important 87-78 road victory over Hanyang University in the Korean University Basketball League on Friday, September 18, 2026. In a game that tipped off at 3:00 p.m. local time at Hanyang University Gymnasium in Seoul, Dongguk controlled the second half, answered every Hanyang run, and closed out the win with steady free-throw shooting and timely perimeter defense.

The final score of 87-78 reflects a competitive contest that was tighter than the margin suggests for much of the afternoon. Hanyang stayed within striking distance until the final minutes, but Dongguk’s balanced scoring and composure in crunch time made the difference in the Korean University Basketball League standings.

Match Overview

Hanyang entered the game looking to protect home court and use its interior size to control the paint. Dongguk, meanwhile, leaned on guard play, ball movement, and transition opportunities. The opening quarter was played at a quick pace, with both teams trading baskets and neither side able to build a significant lead.

Dongguk took a 44-39 lead into halftime after a late second-quarter surge. That five-point cushion gave the visiting side momentum, but Hanyang responded early in the third quarter with a run of its own, cutting the deficit and forcing Dongguk to adjust defensively. The game remained within one or two possessions until the final five minutes, when Dongguk pulled away.

How Dongguk Built the Win

Dongguk’s victory was built on three key factors: perimeter efficiency, rebounding discipline, and fewer turnovers. The visiting team shot better from beyond the arc and converted second-chance opportunities at critical moments. Hanyang had stretches of strong half-court execution, especially when feeding the ball inside, but the home side struggled to string together enough defensive stops in the fourth quarter.

Dongguk also won the turnover battle, which allowed it to attempt more shots and limit Hanyang’s fast-break chances. When Hanyang tried to pressure the ball late, Dongguk’s guards handled the trap well and found open teammates. That poise turned a tense one-possession game into a nine-point win.

Key Moments

• Second-quarter close: Dongguk ended the first half on a 10-4 run, turning a narrow deficit into a 44-39 halftime lead.
• Third-quarter response: Hanyang opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt to briefly take the lead, but Dongguk answered with back-to-back three-pointers.
• Fourth-quarter separation: With the score at 72-69 in favor of Dongguk, the visitors went on a decisive 9-0 run, capped by a fast-break layup and a pull-up jumper.
• Closing free throws: Dongguk made 7 of its final 8 free-throw attempts in the last two minutes to seal the 87-78 result.

Tactical Story

Dongguk’s coaching staff made a key adjustment in the second half, mixing in a compact zone defense that slowed Hanyang’s interior touches. The change forced Hanyang to settle for more contested jump shots, and the home team’s shooting percentage dipped in the fourth quarter. Dongguk also crashed the defensive glass harder after halftime, limiting Hanyang’s second-chance points.

Hanyang’s best stretch came when it played through its center and attacked the offensive boards. That approach kept the game close, but Dongguk’s ability to switch screens and recover to shooters disrupted Hanyang’s rhythm. On offense, Dongguk used high ball screens to create driving lanes, then kicked out to open shooters when Hanyang’s help defense collapsed.

Standout Players

Dongguk’s backcourt leader was the engine of the offense, finishing with 22 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. The starting power forward added 18 points and 9 rebounds, including several tough finishes in traffic. Dongguk’s bench also provided a spark, contributing 14 points and helping maintain defensive intensity when the starters rested.

For Hanyang, the center recorded a strong double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds, while the shooting guard added 16 points and 4 assists. Hanyang’s forwards combined for 21 points, but the team’s overall three-point shooting fell short of what was needed to keep pace with Dongguk’s late scoring burst.

Season Impact and What It Means

The win strengthens Dongguk University’s position in the upper half of the Korean University Basketball League table. It also gives the program valuable momentum in the race for a high seed and a favorable matchup later in the season. For Hanyang, the loss is a missed opportunity to gain ground at home, though the team’s interior play and rebounding effort offer positive signs for the games ahead.
