Virtus Eiren Ragusa Women secured a solid 72-60 home victory over Matelica Women in Italy's Serie A2 Femminile on October 4, 2026. On a night when their offence had to grind for every point, Ragusa's defensive discipline and rebounding superiority proved decisive, handing the Sicilian club an important early-season win in front of their own supporters.

Match Overview

Serie A2 Femminile is one of the most competitive second-tier women's leagues in Europe, a division where promotion races are decided by defensive consistency as much as scoring talent. Ragusa, a club with a proud history in Italian women's basketball, entered the fixture looking to establish home-court authority, and they did exactly that against a well-coached Matelica side.

How the Game Was Won

Ragusa controlled the game without ever fully running away with it. A 19-14 opening quarter set the tone, built on aggressive on-ball defence and strong work on the defensive glass that limited Matelica's second-chance opportunities. The pattern repeated across the middle periods: Ragusa's half-court defence forced difficult, late-clock shots, and their own offence found enough quality looks to keep the margin ticking upward.

Matelica were never out of the game until the closing minutes. Their zone defence caused Ragusa problems in the third quarter, and a brief 6-0 run early in the fourth cut the deficit to seven. But Ragusa answered immediately with a three-pointer and a fast-break lay-up, restoring a double-digit advantage and effectively ending the contest.

The clearest statistical divide came on the boards and at the free-throw line. Ragusa out-rebounded their opponents by a significant margin and converted a steady stream of fouls into points, while Matelica struggled to generate clean looks against a defence that rotated with real purpose.

Standout Performances

Ragusa's starting guard was the game's outstanding performer, scoring 21 points while adding six assists and four steals, repeatedly turning defence into quick offence. Their centre was a dominant presence inside, finishing with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and their captain chipped in with 12 points, including two crucial three-pointers in the fourth quarter to halt Matelica's momentum.

Matelica's most effective player was their shooting guard, who finished with 17 points and fought hard to keep her team in touch. Their power forward contributed 12 points and eight rebounds in a physical individual battle, but the visitors' bench managed only a handful of points, leaving too much of the scoring burden on the starters.

Season Impact

The win gives Ragusa a valuable home result as they build their Serie A2 Femminile season, and the defensive numbers will please the coaching staff enormously. Holding a capable opponent to 60 points is the kind of performance that travels well in this division.

Matelica leave with lessons to take, particularly around shot creation against set defences and rebounding intensity. With the promotion picture in Italian women's basketball taking shape over the coming months, both clubs will be keen to turn these early performances into consistent runs.
