Virtus Cagliari Women edged a high-tempo contest against Vicenza Women, winning 85-77 in Italy Women A2 action. In a game defined by quick transitions and efficient perimeter shooting, the Sardinian side's ability to score in bunches during the closing minutes proved decisive.

Match Overview

Both teams arrived with an attacking mindset, and the opening exchanges reflected that. Cagliari led by just three at the end of the first quarter and by six at half-time, with Vicenza refusing to let the game slip away. The third period was the visitors' best, and they briefly narrowed the gap before Cagliari reasserted control down the stretch.

• Final score: Virtus Cagliari Women 85 – 77 Vicenza Women
• Competition: Italy Women A2
• Quarter breakdown: 22-19, 21-18, 19-20, 23-20
• Key theme: Cagliari's fourth-quarter execution from the free-throw line and beyond the arc

The eight-point final margin slightly flattered Cagliari, who spent long stretches of the contest trading baskets rather than dominating. But in a league where home court matters, they found the extra gear when it counted.

How the Game Was Won

Cagliari's offence was at its best when they played with pace. Their guards pushed the ball after defensive rebounds, attacking before Vicenza's defence could set. That approach generated open corner threes and easy transition layups, particularly during a 23-point fourth quarter that ultimately settled the outcome.

Vicenza, for their part, were far from passive. Their half-court offence relied on patient ball reversal and strong interior finishing, and they consistently punished Cagliari's over-helping defence with skip passes to the weak side. The problem was consistency: every time Vicenza strung together consecutive scores, Cagliari answered immediately.

Key Moments

With just over six minutes remaining and the lead trimmed to four points, Cagliari produced the decisive sequence of the night. A contested mid-range jumper was followed by a steal at half-court and a fast-break basket, forcing Vicenza into a timeout. Out of the break, Cagliari's defence forced a shot-clock violation, and two converted free throws stretched the advantage back to double digits.

Vicenza kept fighting, drawing fouls and converting at the line, but the clock became their opponent. Cagliari's composure in the final two minutes — protecting the ball, hitting free throws, and forcing Vicenza to foul — closed out the win professionally.

Standout Performances

Cagliari's backcourt controlled the tempo of the game, and their shooting guard produced the clutch baskets that broke Vicenza's momentum. Inside, the home side's post players battled on the boards, securing crucial offensive rebounds that extended possessions during the fourth-quarter run.

Vicenza's leading scorers kept them in contention throughout, with their perimeter shooting and driving ability causing persistent problems. Their effort on the defensive glass was commendable, but they struggled to contain Cagliari's transition attack — the single biggest difference between the two teams on the night.

Season Impact

This victory keeps Cagliari in a healthy position in the Italy Women A2 standings and underlines the value of their home form. Scoring 85 points against a defensively organised opponent is a statement of offensive intent, and it gives the coaching staff a clear blueprint to build on.

For Vicenza, the defeat is a frustrating one — they competed for long stretches and will feel the margin could have been smaller. Their challenge now is to convert competitive performances into wins, particularly in the closing five minutes of tight games.
