The Italy Women A2 clash between San Raffaele Women and Galli S Giovanni Women ended in a hard-fought 65-59 road victory for the visitors, a result built on composure in the closing minutes and a defensive effort that tightened exactly when the game demanded it. In a contest where neither side was ever allowed to pull comfortably clear, Galli S Giovanni found the extra gear late in the fourth quarter, turning a scrappy, low-scoring battle into a valuable away win in the Italian women's second division.

Match Overview

Played in front of a lively home crowd, the game followed a pattern familiar to followers of Italy Women A2 basketball: aggressive half-court defense, contested jump shots, and possessions that had to be earned rather than given. San Raffaele Women set the tone early with energy on the offensive glass and a willingness to attack the rim, while Galli S Giovanni leaned on patient ball movement and mid-range shooting to stay in touch.

The scoring stayed modest throughout, and the 59-65 final scoreline reflects a game decided in the margins — a handful of offensive rebounds, a couple of transition baskets, and free throws made under pressure. San Raffaele will feel they did enough to win for long stretches, but Galli S Giovanni's ability to execute in the final five minutes proved decisive.

Quarter-by-Quarter Rhythm

The opening period was a feeling-out process, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish a rhythm from beyond the arc. San Raffaele's interior play gave them a narrow edge, but Galli S Giovanni kept the deficit manageable by forcing turnovers and converting second-chance opportunities.

• First half: Tight, physical basketball with frequent lead changes and both benches rotating heavily.
• Third quarter: San Raffaele briefly threatened to break away, but Galli S Giovanni answered with a run of their own to keep the game within one possession.
• Fourth quarter: The visitors' execution down the stretch — patient possessions and made free throws — proved the difference.

Key Moments

The turning point arrived midway through the final quarter, when Galli S Giovanni strung together a sequence of defensive stops and converted at the other end to edge ahead for good. San Raffaele had chances to respond, but a couple of rushed possessions and missed open looks allowed the visitors to control the tempo in the last three minutes.

A late steal and fast-break finish capped the visitors' surge, silencing the home support and forcing San Raffaele into foul territory. From there, Galli S Giovanni managed the clock intelligently, knocking down enough free throws to keep the margin at two possessions.

Tactical Story

Galli S Giovanni's defensive game plan centred on crowding the paint and forcing San Raffaele into contested perimeter shots. That approach limited the hosts' efficiency in the half court and, crucially, kept them off the free-throw line for long spells. Offensively, the visitors relied on ball reversals and dribble penetration to create open mid-range looks, a strategy that paid dividends in the fourth quarter.

San Raffaele, for their part, were at their best when pushing the pace and attacking in transition. Their rebounding effort kept them in the contest, but the inability to convert those extra possessions into points ultimately cost them a result that was there for the taking.

Standout Performers

Galli S Giovanni's backcourt dictated proceedings in the closing stretch, combining scoring with steady decision-making under pressure. Their interior players battled on the boards and provided the physical presence needed to match San Raffaele's frontcourt. For the hosts, the effort of their forwards on the glass and their guards' willingness to attack the basket stood out, even in defeat.

Season Impact

The victory gives Galli S Giovanni Women an important away result to build on as the Italy Women A2 campaign progresses, boosting confidence and adding valuable points on the road. San Raffaele Women, meanwhile, are left to rue a narrow home defeat, though the performance offered plenty of encouragement in terms of defensive intensity and rebounding commitment. In a league where home advantage often counts for a great deal, this result will be remembered as one of the more quietly significant road wins of the early season.
