The first half was played at a quick pace, with both teams trading leads and neither side able to build a double-digit advantage. Thor’s half-court execution and ability to score through contact gave them a narrow edge at the break, while Fjolnir stayed within reach thanks to perimeter shooting and second-chance points.

Key Moments

The decisive stretch came in the fourth quarter, when Thor Ak Akureyri produced a compact 8-0 run to turn a one-possession game into a two-basket cushion. Fjolnir responded with a three-pointer and a fast-break layup, but Thor answered with back-to-back scores in the paint and then knocked down free throws in the closing minute. A contested defensive rebound with under 30 seconds remaining effectively sealed the result.

Standout Performers

Thor Ak Akureyri were led by forward Elias Gunnarsson, who finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds, repeatedly winning position inside and drawing fouls. Guard Viktor Sveinsson added 18 points and seven assists, controlling the tempo in the final quarter. For Fjolnir, Aron Bjarnason scored 24 points, while Magnus Helgason contributed 15 points and eight rebounds in a losing effort.

Tactical Story

Thor’s decision to mix man-to-man defense with a compact zone in the second half slowed Fjolnir’s dribble penetration and forced several late-clock shots. On offense, Thor went repeatedly to the pick-and-roll and attacked the offensive glass, finishing with a meaningful edge in second-chance points. Fjolnir shot well enough from outside to stay close, but their turnovers in the final five minutes proved costly.

Season Impact

The road win gives Thor Ak Akureyri an important early-season result in the Iceland Basketball Division 1 standings and reinforces their ability to close out tight games. Fjolnir will take encouragement from a competitive performance but will rue missed opportunities at home. In a league where road victories often shape the playoff picture, Thor’s late execution could prove valuable.
