Fjolnir secured a hard-fought 98-88 victory over Hamar Hottur in Iceland Basketball Division 1 on 3 October 2026, grinding out a ten-point win in a game that stayed competitive deep into the fourth quarter.

Unlike the night's other high-scoring fixtures in the division, this one was decided by defensive discipline and control of the boards rather than a track meet. Fjolnir never allowed Hamar Hottur to build extended scoring runs, and their ability to answer every visiting surge proved the difference.

Match overview

The opening quarter was tight, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish control. Fjolnir's half-court defence was organised from the start, forcing Hamar Hottur into late-clock attempts, while the hosts looked to attack early in the shot clock when the opportunity arose.

The second and third quarters followed a similar pattern: Fjolnir would edge ahead, Hamar Hottur would respond with a run of their own, and the margin hovered in single digits. It was only in the closing minutes that the home side finally pulled clear.

Key moments

The decisive stretch came in the fourth quarter. With the game still within one or two possessions, Fjolnir produced a sequence of stops that forced Hamar Hottur into difficult shots, then converted at the other end with patient offence. A three-pointer followed by a fast-break basket pushed the lead into double figures and effectively sealed the result.

Hamar Hottur had chances to close the gap but were undone by turnovers at the worst possible moments and a difficult night at the free-throw line.

How Fjolnir won it

• Rebounding: a clear advantage on the defensive glass limited Hamar Hottur's second-chance points.
• Late-game execution: Fjolnir scored efficiently in the final five minutes while their opponents stalled.
• Balanced scoring: contributions across the rotation made the hosts difficult to defend.
• Free-throw accuracy: converting from the line in the fourth quarter protected the lead.

Standout performers

Fjolnir's frontcourt set the tone with physical play inside, scoring in the post and drawing fouls that put Hamar Hottur in early penalty trouble. Their guards managed the game well in the closing minutes, slowing the tempo when the lead needed protecting. For Hamar Hottur, the brightest spells came from their perimeter shooting, which kept them in the contest through three quarters, but the offence became too reliant on contested jumpers as the game wore on.

Standings and season outlook

Iceland Basketball Division 1 remains one of the most competitive second-tier leagues in Nordic basketball, with promotion to the Úrvalsdeild at stake for the leading clubs and relegation pressure at the other end of the table. Wins like this one — competitive, low-margin and decided by execution rather than a hot shooting night — often prove the most valuable over a long season.

Fjolnir will take confidence from a controlled fourth quarter and a defensive performance that held a dangerous opponent to 88 points. Hamar Hottur leave with a narrow defeat but with evidence that they can compete in tight games; converting those into wins is the next step.
