Sacatepequez Maxi grinded out a 61-48 road win over Suchitepequez in the Guatemala Maxi league, relying on half-court defense and a patient inside-out attack to pull away in the second half.

The game was never going to be a track meet, and both teams seemed comfortable with that. Sacatepequez led 15-12 after the first quarter and 29-22 at halftime, then steadily extended the margin with a 16-13 third quarter. Suchitepequez threatened briefly in the fourth, but Sacatepequez’s defense held firm and their free-throw shooting closed the door. The win is a valuable one in a Maxi division where road victories are often hard to come by.

Match overview

Sacatepequez controlled the tempo from the opening possession, using long offensive sets and frequent post touches to keep Suchitepequez’s defense engaged. Suchitepequez stayed close early behind José Quiñónez’s mid-range shooting, but they struggled to generate clean looks against Sacatepequez’s compact zone. The visitors pulled away in the third quarter with a 10-2 run and never let the lead slip below seven in the final period.

Suchitepequez called timeout, but the momentum had shifted. A three-pointer from Luis Gramajo pushed the lead to 13 early in the fourth, and Suchitepequez could not string together enough stops to mount a serious comeback.

Tactical story

Sacatepequez won this game with defense and second-chance points. They held Suchitepequez to 34% shooting and forced 18 turnovers, many of which came from their active hands in the passing lanes. On offense, Sacatepequez leaned on Méndez in the post and Gramajo in pick-and-roll situations, generating high-percentage looks late in the clock. Suchitepequez’s zone kept the score low, but their inability to score in the paint limited their comeback chances.

Standout players

Carlos Méndez led Sacatepequez Maxi with 17 points and nine rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends. Luis Gramajo added 14 points and six assists, while reserve forward Marco Tulio contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. For Suchitepequez, José Quiñónez scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and veteran guard Ricardo Solís added 11 points. Suchitepequez’s bench was outscored 18-9, a margin that proved significant in a low-scoring game.

Season impact

The victory gives Sacatepequez Maxi an important road result and reinforces their reputation as one of the division’s more disciplined defensive teams. Suchitepequez will look to improve their shot selection and rebounding positioning before their next outing. In a Maxi league defined by physical play and narrow margins, this was a performance built on exactly those qualities.
