Match overview

The contest lived up to its billing as one of the more competitive fixtures of the round. Neither side led by more than nine points at any stage, and the lead changed hands repeatedly through the second half. Rustavi's home crowd played a part, particularly during a decisive fourth-quarter run that turned a six-point deficit into a narrow lead they would not surrender.

Key moments

Rustavi started brightly, moving the ball crisply and finding open shooters against VSA's switching defense. A 9–2 run midway through the first quarter gave them their first meaningful cushion, but VSA responded with three-point shooting of their own to keep the deficit manageable.

The third quarter belonged to the visitors. VSA tightened their defense, forced Rustavi into several rushed attempts and briefly took the lead late in the period. Early in the fourth they stretched the advantage to six points, and at that stage the momentum appeared to have shifted.

Rustavi's answer was immediate. A 9–0 run, sparked by a transition dunk and capped by a corner three, restored the home lead with just under four minutes remaining. VSA had chances to tie in the final minute, but a contested three-pointer rimmed out, and Rustavi iced the game with two free throws in the last ten seconds.

Tactical breakdown

Both teams favoured an up-tempo approach, and the pace of the game produced a high number of possessions for a 97–94 scoreline. Rustavi's offense revolved around pick-and-roll actions at the top of the key, with their guards probing the paint and kicking out to shooters when the defense collapsed.

VSA were at their best in transition, scoring efficiently off long rebounds and steals. Their zone defense in the third quarter briefly disrupted Rustavi's rhythm, but the hosts adjusted by attacking the middle of the zone rather than settling for perimeter shots. Rebounding was nearly even, though Rustavi's edge on the offensive glass generated several crucial second-chance points down the stretch.

Standout players

Rustavi's leading guard was the engine of the win, scoring a game-high total while also creating for teammates and controlling the tempo in the fourth quarter. Their forward contributed a double-double, and the team's shooting from beyond the arc — particularly in the second half — kept VSA from committing fully to help defense.

For VSA, the backcourt duo combined for the bulk of the scoring and kept their team in front during the third-quarter surge. Their center was effective on the boards, but foul trouble limited his minutes in the final period, a factor that proved costly as Rustavi attacked the rim late.

Standings and season impact

With the win, Energy Invest Rustavi 1991 strengthen their place in the Georgia Super League standings and gain an important head-to-head advantage over a direct rival. In a league where road wins are hard to come by, this result could prove significant when the playoff seedings are decided.

VSA leave with a narrow defeat but plenty of positives. Their ability to build a fourth-quarter lead on the road suggests they remain a genuine threat in the competition, and the margin between the two sides was small enough that a rematch later in the season promises to be just as tight.
