ALBA Berlin 83-71 Brose Bamberg: Berlin Pull Away to Reach German Basketball Cup Progress

ALBA Berlin defeated Brose Bamberg 83-71 in German Basketball Cup action on 20 October 2026, using a strong second half to advance. The home side trailed briefly in the first half but took control after the break with improved defense and efficient shot-making.

Cup games often hinge on which team handles the pressure better, and ALBA's experience showed. Berlin's ball movement and defensive adjustments turned a tight contest into a comfortable win, while Brose Bamberg's early energy faded as the game wore on.

Match overview

Brose Bamberg started aggressively, attacking the rim and keeping ALBA on its heels. The visitors' guards found seams in the defense and knocked down timely shots. ALBA, meanwhile, relied on its interior scoring and offensive rebounding to stay close. The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to build a significant lead.

The momentum shifted in the third quarter. ALBA increased its defensive pressure, contested passes, and forced Bamberg into tougher shots. On offense, Berlin began to find open shooters through drive-and-kick actions. A run midway through the period gave ALBA a lead it would not relinquish.

Key moments

• ALBA closed the first half with a late scoring burst to erase Bamberg's early advantage.
• A third-quarter run, built on defensive stops and transition baskets, put Berlin ahead for good.
• Bamberg cut the deficit to single digits in the fourth, but ALBA answered with a three-pointer and a strong defensive possession.
• Berlin's free-throw shooting in the final two minutes sealed the result.

Tactical story

ALBA's halftime adjustments were crucial. Berlin tightened its pick-and-roll coverage and forced Bamberg's ball handlers toward help defenders. That change disrupted Bamberg's rhythm and created turnovers. Offensively, ALBA used its size advantage on the glass and moved the ball patiently until an open shot appeared. The hosts also attacked the paint more aggressively in the second half, drawing fouls and getting to the line.

Bamberg's effort was commendable, especially in the first half, but the visitors struggled to sustain execution against ALBA's pressure. Their three-point shooting kept them within reach for a while, but Berlin's inside scoring and second-chance points proved more reliable down the stretch.

Standout performers

ALBA's backcourt managed the game well, controlling tempo and finding teammates in scoring positions. The frontcourt controlled the boards and provided a steady inside presence. For Brose Bamberg, the guards were the primary source of offense, but the team needed more balanced scoring to counter Berlin's second-half run.

What it means

The win sends ALBA Berlin through in the German Basketball Cup and reinforces their ability to win in knockout conditions. Brose Bamberg will take lessons from a competitive first half but will be disappointed with the third-quarter lapse. For ALBA, the focus now shifts to the next round, where the margin for error will be even smaller.
