Montbrison Women secured an impressive 83-74 road victory over Cavigal Nice Basket 06 Women in the France Women’s Basketball Cup on September 20, 2026. The win sends Montbrison into the next round of the knockout competition and eliminates a determined Nice side that fought until the final whistle.

Match Overview

The opening quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with Nice using their home crowd to build an early 12-6 lead. Montbrison responded with a 14-2 run that flipped the momentum and never truly surrendered it. By the end of the first period, Montbrison led 22-20, and they extended the advantage to 43-38 by halftime.

The third quarter saw Nice make their strongest push of the night. A 10-2 run early in the period brought the home side within two points, but Montbrison’s defense tightened and their outside shooting carried them through. The quarter-by-quarter scores were 20-22, 18-21, 19-19, and 17-21, reflecting a game that Montbrison controlled for the majority of the evening.

Key Moments

With Nice trailing 60-58 midway through the fourth quarter, Montbrison delivered the decisive blow. A quick 7-0 run, sparked by a steal and a corner three-pointer, pushed the lead back to nine and forced Nice to chase the game. Montbrison then knocked down their free throws down the stretch to close out the victory.

Nice had one final chance to cut the deficit to four with just over a minute remaining, but a contested three-pointer rimmed out. Montbrison grabbed the rebound and sealed the win at the line, advancing in the cup with a composed road performance.

Tactical Story

Montbrison’s zone defense gave Nice fits for long stretches. The home side struggled to find rhythm against the packed-in look, settling for contested jumpers instead of attacking the gaps. When Nice did penetrate, Montbrison rotated well and forced difficult finishes. On the offensive end, Montbrison’s ball movement was excellent, creating open looks from beyond the arc and inside the paint.

Nice’s biggest issue was turnovers. They coughed the ball up 17 times, leading to 21 Montbrison points. In a cup game where every possession is magnified, that disparity proved too much to overcome. Nice’s rebounding effort was strong, but their half-court offense lacked the fluidity needed to break down a disciplined Montbrison defense.

Standout Players

• Chloé Vidal (Montbrison Women): 24 points, including five three-pointers. She was the game’s leading scorer and hit the biggest shot of the night.
• Manon Girard (Montbrison Women): 12 points and 11 rebounds. A double-double that anchored the interior.
• Léa Favre (Cavigal Nice Basket 06 Women): 20 points and 8 rebounds. She kept Nice alive with relentless attacking.
• Inès Roux (Cavigal Nice Basket 06 Women): 15 points and 4 assists. Her speed caused problems, but foul trouble limited her minutes.

Season Impact

For Montbrison, the cup run continues and provides a welcome confidence boost. They now await their next opponent with momentum on their side. For Cavigal Nice Basket 06 Women, the focus shifts back to league play, where they will look to convert their competitive cup performance into consistent results. Cup exits are always painful, but Nice showed enough fight to suggest they will be a tough out in domestic competition.
