The FIBA Women's Basketball League Americas delivered another instant classic on Thursday, as Ferrocarril Oeste Women edged Defensor Sporting Women 78-76 in a contest that came down to the final possession. The Argentine hosts survived a furious second-half rally from their Uruguayan visitors, holding their nerve at the free-throw line in the closing seconds to protect a two-point margin that never felt safe until the buzzer sounded.

A Two-Point Win That Felt Like a Playoff Battle

From the opening tip, this was a game defined by runs. Ferrocarril Oeste came out aggressive on their home floor, pushing the tempo and attacking the rim early to build a working lead. Defensor Sporting, the reigning force in Uruguayan women's basketball, absorbed the pressure and answered with the kind of disciplined half-court execution that has made them a regular presence in continental competition.

The final scoreline of 78-76 tells the story of a match with 12 lead changes and a level of physicality more typical of a semifinal than a group-stage fixture. Neither side managed to pull away by more than nine points at any stage, and the fourth quarter was played almost entirely within a single possession.

How Ferrocarril Oeste Built the Win

The home side's success started on the defensive end. Ferrocarril Oeste's guards pressed the ball handler aggressively beyond the arc, forcing Defensor Sporting into late-clock situations and contested jumpers. That pressure translated into transition opportunities, and the Argentines consistently converted stops into quick points at the other end — a pattern that accounted for a meaningful share of their scoring across the middle two quarters.

On offense, the hosts leaned on interior finishing and second-chance points. Their offensive rebounding kept possessions alive at critical moments, particularly during a third-quarter stretch when Defensor Sporting threatened to take control of the game. Ferrocarril's ability to score through contact and get to the line proved decisive in a game decided by a single basket.

Defensor Sporting's Fightback

Trailing for much of the second half, Defensor Sporting refused to fade. The Uruguayans adjusted their spacing, moved the ball more patiently against the press, and found rhythm from the perimeter to claw the deficit back into single digits and then to level terms. Their ball movement in the fourth quarter was genuinely excellent, generating open looks from the corners and pull-up opportunities in the mid-range.

With under a minute remaining, the visitors had a chance to tie or take the lead. A contested look rimmed out, Ferrocarril Oeste secured the rebound, and the hosts iced the game from the charity stripe — just enough to hold on for the 78-76 victory.

Key Moments That Decided It

• Third-quarter surge: Defensor Sporting cut a nine-point deficit to two with a run built on perimeter shooting and improved ball security.
• Offensive rebounds: Ferrocarril Oeste repeatedly extended possessions in the final period, burning clock and drawing fouls.
• Free throws down the stretch: The hosts converted their late attempts, which ultimately separated the teams by the final two-point margin.
• Final defensive stand: A missed Defensor Sporting attempt in the closing seconds sealed the result.

Tactical Story of the Game

This was a matchup of contrasting identities. Ferrocarril Oeste wanted tempo: press, run, attack early in the shot clock, and win the battle on the glass. Defensor Sporting preferred control: patient half-court sets, high screen-and-roll actions, and kick-out shooting. For three quarters, the pace battle stayed roughly even, which is precisely why the scoreboard stayed so tight.

The decisive factor was efficiency at the rim. Ferrocarril Oeste generated more high-percentage attempts close to the basket and complemented them with enough free throws to compensate for Defensor Sporting's edge from three-point range. In a two-point game, that trade-off was the difference.

Standout Performers

Ferrocarril Oeste's backcourt set the tone on both ends, pressuring the ball and creating the transition points that kept the hosts in front. Their frontcourt players were equally important, battling on the offensive boards and finishing through contact in the paint. For Defensor Sporting, the perimeter scoring kept
