VEF Riga Juniors produced a blistering offensive display in the FIBA Europe Cup, overwhelming Lokomotiv Plovdiv 106-83 in a high-tempo contest that showcased the Latvian side's shooting and transition scoring. The hosts passed the century mark with time to spare, delivering one of the more entertaining performances of the round.

A fast, free-scoring opening

From the opening possessions it was clear this would be a game played at pace. VEF Riga Juniors pushed the ball relentlessly off made baskets and misses alike, and Lokomotiv Plovdiv, rather than slowing the tempo, chose to trade punches. The first quarter alone produced a flurry of three-pointers from both sides, with the teams combining for a remarkably high scoring total in the opening ten minutes.

Riga's young guards looked comfortable in the open floor, and their confidence grew with every successful transition possession.

Key moments

• First quarter: Riga closed the period on an 11-3 run to take control, with three straight three-pointers from the wings.
• Second quarter: A 14-2 burst extended the lead beyond twenty, effectively deciding the contest before halftime.
• Third quarter: Lokomotiv Plovdiv enjoyed their best spell, cutting the deficit through improved half-court execution and offensive rebounding.
• Fourth quarter: Riga answered emphatically, restoring a comfortable margin and crossing the 100-point mark with several minutes remaining.

Tactical story: transition, threes and depth

VEF Riga Juniors won this game in transition. Their defensive rebounding was solid and their outlets were quick, allowing them to attack before Lokomotiv's defence could set. The result was a steady stream of layups and open corner three-pointers, and the Bulgarian side never found a way to slow the game down.

Riga's bench also made a significant contribution, maintaining the tempo when the starters rested and extending the lead rather than surrendering it. Lokomotiv Plovdiv, meanwhile, were most effective when they attacked the offensive glass and generated second-chance points, but those spells were too infrequent to change the outcome.

Standout performers

Rihards Ozols was excellent for VEF Riga Juniors, scoring efficiently from the perimeter and pushing the pace every time he touched the ball. Kristaps Berzins added a strong all-round performance with points, rebounds and assists, while Arturs Kalnins provided a major lift off the bench with a flurry of second-quarter scoring.

For Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Dimitar Hristov fought hard throughout, leading his team's scoring effort and attacking the rim with purpose. Ivan Petkov contributed from beyond the arc and on the boards, but the visitors struggled to contain Riga's speed in the open court.

What the result means

A 23-point victory in the FIBA Europe Cup is significant for VEF Riga Juniors, both in terms of group standings and point differential. It also signals the depth of the Latvian development pipeline, with young players performing confidently on the continental stage.

Lokomotiv Plovdiv will need to address their transition defence, which was exposed repeatedly. Their third-quarter showing demonstrated that they can compete in the half court, and building on that foundation will be the priority in upcoming fixtures.
