The FIBA Europe Cup continued with a commanding home performance as Lisboa e Benfica defeated HBK Prievidza 98-83 on Thursday night in Lisbon. The Portuguese side used a blistering first half to build a cushion they never surrendered, moving the ball with purpose and punishing the Slovak visitors from beyond the arc in a game that was decided well before the final buzzer.

Match Overview

Benfica came into the contest intent on dictating tempo, and it took only a few minutes for that plan to bear fruit. The hosts pushed the ball in transition off every defensive rebound, forcing Prievidza into early rotations and open looks from the perimeter. By the end of the first quarter the Eagles had already established a double-digit working margin, and the pattern of the evening was set: Benfica attacking, Prievidza chasing.

The second period brought the most entertaining basketball of the night. Benfica's ball movement stretched the Slovak defense to its limit, while Prievidza responded with a more physical, interior-oriented approach that generated second-chance points. The visitors briefly trimmed the deficit to single figures before a late surge restored a comfortable halftime lead for the home side.

Key Moments

• First-quarter break: A rapid 10-0 run from Benfica turned an even start into an early lead that shaped the rest of the contest.
• Halftime surge: Back-to-back three-pointers in the closing two minutes of the second quarter pushed the advantage back toward double digits at the interval.
• Third-quarter answer: Prievidza's best spell came immediately after the restart, cutting the gap to seven before Benfica steadied with a composed half-court set.
• Closing run: A decisive 12-2 burst midway through the fourth quarter ended any realistic hope of a comeback.

Tactical Story

The game turned on Benfica's perimeter shooting and their willingness to share the ball. The Eagles consistently found the extra pass, swinging the ball from side to side until Prievidza's help defense arrived a step too late. That spacing created clean catch-and-shoot opportunities and kept the Slovak big men honest, opening driving lanes in the second half.

Prievidza, by contrast, were at their best when they slowed the game down and attacked the paint. Their offensive rebounding kept them within touching distance for long stretches, and their physicality on the block caused problems. The issue was consistency: every time the visitors built momentum, turnovers or a rushed shot allowed Benfica to run.

Standout Performers

Benfica's backcourt controlled the evening, combining efficient scoring with a high assist count and very few giveaways. The frontcourt chipped in with timely offensive rebounds and strong interior defense in the fourth quarter, when the game was still alive. For Prievidza, the interior scoring and rebounding effort stood out, with their leading contributors battling throughout despite the scoreline.

Season Impact

The result gives Benfica a valuable home win in FIBA Europe Cup group play, exactly the sort of result that shapes qualification arithmetic later in the campaign. Winning by 15 at home also provides a healthy points-difference buffer, which can prove decisive in tightly contested pools.

For Prievidza, the defeat is a reminder of how punishing European road games can be. The Slovak side showed enough in patches to suggest they can compete on home soil, but they will need to reduce turnovers and defend the three-point line better if they are to climb the standings.

What's Next

Benfica will look to carry this rhythm into their next continental fixture, while Prievidza return home seeking a response. Both teams remain firmly in the group-stage conversation, and the reverse fixture promises to be a far tighter affair.
