Basquet Girona opened their FIBA Europe Cup campaign with a commanding 87-75 home victory over Dinamo Bucuresti, pulling away in the third quarter and never allowing the Romanian visitors to complete a late comeback.

The Spanish side led 42-37 at halftime, but the game truly swung after the break. A dominant 25-17 third quarter turned a five-point lead into a 67-54 advantage, and Girona’s balanced offense did enough in the fourth to close out a valuable European win. The final score reflected Girona’s control over the second half, even as Dinamo Bucuresti continued to fight until the final buzzer.

Key Moments

Girona’s decisive run came early in the third quarter. Leading 42-37 at the break, the hosts opened the second half with a 12-3 surge, capped by a corner three-pointer that forced Dinamo into a timeout. The run was powered by crisp ball movement, active hands on defense, and transition baskets off live-ball turnovers.

Dinamo Bucuresti responded with a mini-run of their own, cutting the lead to 11 midway through the third, but Girona closed the period on an 8-2 spurt to restore full control. In the fourth quarter, the visitors never got closer than nine points. Girona’s half-court offense slowed the tempo, protected the lead, and converted enough free throws to keep the game out of reach.

Tactical Story

Girona won this game with balance and efficiency. The Spanish side shared the ball well, attacked closeouts, and punished Dinamo’s help defense with timely kick-out passes. Their three-point shooting stretched the floor, opening driving lanes for guards and cutters. Defensively, Girona did a strong job of containing Dinamo’s primary ball handlers, forcing them into contested pull-ups and late-clock decisions.

Dinamo Bucuresti had success when they played through their big men and crashed the offensive glass, but those possessions were not frequent enough. The Romanian side also struggled with turnovers in the third quarter, and Girona converted those mistakes into easy points. In a FIBA Europe Cup game where possessions are precious, that stretch proved decisive.

Standout Performers

Girona’s scoring was spread across the rotation, a hallmark of their performance. Their backcourt controlled the pace, their wings knocked down open shots, and their interior players finished efficiently around the rim. The bench also provided a spark, maintaining defensive intensity when the starters rested. It was the kind of balanced team win that coaches value in European competition.

For Dinamo Bucuresti, their leading scorer kept the offense afloat with a mix of drives and perimeter shooting, while their captain battled on the boards. But the visitors lacked a consistent second option in the second half, and Girona’s depth eventually wore them down.

What the Result Means

The 87-75 win gives Basquet Girona an important early victory in the FIBA Europe Cup standings. In group-stage play, home wins are crucial, and protecting home court against direct rivals can be the difference between advancing and going home early. Girona will take confidence from their second-half dominance and their balanced scoring attack.

Dinamo Bucuresti leave with a loss but will take some positives from their offensive effort. To bounce back, they will need to reduce turnovers and find more consistent production in the paint. For now, Girona sit atop the early group picture after a professional, well-rounded European performance.
