Basket Club Vienna edged a thriller in the FIBA Europe Cup on Tuesday, holding off Wilki Morskie Szczecin 96-93 in a game that went down to the final possession. In a contest featuring elite shot-making and dramatic swings of momentum, the Austrian side's late-game poise proved decisive in front of their home crowd.

Vienna regained control after the interval, winning the third quarter 24-21 to reduce the deficit to one and setting up a tense final ten minutes that ultimately went their way 25-21.

Key Moments

With under three minutes remaining and the score tied, Vienna produced the game's defining sequence: a contested three-pointer from the wing followed by a defensive stop and a transition layup, opening a five-point gap that would ultimately hold. Szczecin had a look to force overtime in the closing seconds, but the attempt rimmed out.

Earlier, the game's momentum had swung repeatedly. Szczecin's best spell came late in the second quarter, when they closed the half on a 10-3 run to take their biggest lead of the night into the break.

Tactical Story

Vienna's adjustment at halftime was the key tactical feature of the game. After conceding 51 first-half points, they switched to a more aggressive defensive scheme, hedging harder on ball screens and closing out more decisively on shooters. Szczecin's efficiency dropped noticeably as a result, and their half-court offence became increasingly reliant on difficult individual plays.

Offensively, Vienna attacked the paint with purpose, drawing fouls and generating free throws down the stretch. Their willingness to play inside-out created the spacing that produced open looks in the fourth quarter.

Standout Performers

Vienna's backcourt delivered when it mattered most, combining for the majority of the team's fourth-quarter points and controlling the tempo during the decisive final minutes. Their rebounding guards also contributed important hustle plays that limited Szczecin's second-chance opportunities.

For Wilki Morskie Szczecin, the scoring output was impressive and their three-point shooting in the first half kept them in front for long stretches. Their leading scorer was a constant threat, but foul trouble limited his impact defensively in the closing period.

Season Impact

A three-point win in FIBA Europe Cup group play can be worth far more than the margin suggests. For Basket Club Vienna, the result keeps them firmly in the race for progression and gives them valuable confidence in tight games. For Szczecin, the narrow defeat leaves little room for error in the remaining fixtures, though their offensive performance suggests they will remain a dangerous opponent.

Both teams now turn their attention to the next round of European fixtures, with qualification scenarios beginning to take shape across the competition.
