The decisive stretch came late in the third quarter. Burundi used a 12-2 run to turn a five-point lead into a 15-point cushion, with two steals leading directly to fast-break baskets. Equity Bank called timeout, but Burundi kept its momentum by hitting a three-pointer out of the break.

Equity Bank made one final push early in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 10 on a pair of free throws, but Burundi answered with six straight points. That sequence effectively sealed the result and gave Burundi a valuable points-differential advantage in group play.

Tactical Story

Equity Bank was most effective when it attacked the basket through its wings, but Burundi’s help defense rotated well and contested shots at the rim. Equity Bank’s half-court offense became predictable in the second half, and its three-point shooting cooled after a solid start.

Standout Players

Burundi’s center was the game’s top performer with 20 points and 12 rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends. The starting point guard added 14 points and six assists, while a reserve guard provided a spark with 11 points off the bench.

Equity Bank’s guard led her team with 18 points and five rebounds, repeatedly attacking off the dribble. The Equity Bank forward chipped in 12 points and eight rebounds, but foul trouble limited her impact in the second half.

Season Impact

The win gives Burundi Women an early edge in the FIBA Basketball Africa Women League group standings and a strong points differential. Equity Bank Women will look to regroup defensively after allowing 80 points. With the competition featuring several tightly matched teams, Burundi’s ability to win by double digits could prove important when tiebreakers are calculated later in the tournament.
