Stariy Lutsk Edge Kharkivski Sokoly 88-86 in SuperLeague Thriller

Stariy Lutsk survived a nervy finish at home on Friday night, holding off Kharkivski Sokoly 88-86 in a Ukrainian Basketball SuperLeague matchup that came down to the final possession. The win gives the Lutsk side a hard-earned result in front of their home crowd, while the Sokoly leave the floor frustrated after pushing the game to the wire and coming up a single basket short.

It was a contest defined by momentum swings. Lutsk built a double-digit cushion in the middle of the game, only for Kharkiv to claw their way back with a barrage of three-point shooting in the fourth quarter. In the end, a pair of clutch free throws and a missed last-second attempt decided a game that neither team ever truly controlled for long.

Neither side shot the ball particularly well in the opening quarter, with both defenses setting a physical tone early. Lutsk settled first, finding rhythm through their half-court offense and getting to the rim with drives from the wings. Kharkiv responded by working the ball inside-out, but too many early turnovers kept them from building any real advantage.

How the Game Unfolded

The first half belonged, marginally, to the hosts. Stariy Lutsk moved the ball well against Kharkiv's switching defense and punished second-chance opportunities on the offensive glass. A late run before the interval gave them a working lead, and the sense inside the arena was that the home side had the game under control.

That feeling lasted until the third quarter, when Kharkivski Sokoly tightened up defensively and began converting in transition. The Sokoly cut the deficit with quick-hitting offense and forced Lutsk into several rushed attempts late in the shot clock. By the end of the period, the game had been reset into a single-digit contest.

The fourth quarter turned into a genuine back-and-forth battle. Kharkiv hit consecutive three-pointers to pull within one possession, and twice had the chance to tie or take the lead. Each time, Stariy Lutsk answered — first with a mid-range jumper off a screen, then with a strong drive that drew contact and sent a shooter to the line.

Key Moments

• Third-quarter surge: Kharkivski Sokoly erased most of Lutsk's lead with a fast-break run, turning a comfortable margin into a one-possession game.
• Clutch shooting: A contested three from the wing brought the Sokoly to within two points in the closing minutes.
• The decisive free throws: With the clock winding down, Stariy Lutsk converted at the stripe to restore a two-point cushion.
• Final possession: Kharkiv's last attempt to tie or win rimmed out, sealing the 88-86 result for the hosts.

Tactical Story

Stariy Lutsk's game plan was built on controlling the paint. They attacked the rim aggressively, drew fouls, and repeatedly forced Kharkiv's big men into help situations that opened up kick-out passes. That inside-out approach produced the bulk of their scoring and, crucially, got them to the free-throw line in the moments that mattered most.

Kharkivski Sokoly, by contrast, lived and died by the perimeter. When their shots fell in the second half, they looked like the better team on the floor; when the rhythm stuttered, they had trouble generating easy baskets. Their defensive pressure created turnovers and transition points, but the half-court execution down the stretch was a step behind their opponent's.

The rebounding battle was another decisive factor. Lutsk's work on the offensive boards extended possessions and produced second-chance points that ultimately accounted for the narrow margin of victory. In a game decided by two points, those extra opportunities were the difference.

Standout Performances

For Stariy Lutsk, the backcourt set the tone on both ends. Their primary ball handler controlled tempo throughout, probing the defense and finding shooters when Kharkiv collapsed into the lane. On the interior, Lutsk's frontcourt players battled for rebounds and finished through contact, giving the team a reliable source of points when the perimeter went cold.

Kharkivski Sokoly got a strong outing from their shooting guard, who carried the offense during the comeback and kept his team in the game with timely shot-making. Their point guard also impressed with pace and vision in transition, repeatedly pushing the ball up the floor before Lutsk's defe
