Panathinaikos AKTOR B.C. defeated Baskonia Vitoria 85-79 in EuroLeague action at the OAKA Indoor Hall on Friday, using a balanced offensive effort and a strong second-half run to secure a valuable home win. Kendrick Nunn led all scorers with 24 points as Panathinaikos protected its home court and kept pace near the top of the early EuroLeague standings.

Match Overview

The first quarter was played at a fast pace, with both teams trading baskets early. Baskonia found success from the perimeter, while Panathinaikos leaned on its interior game and transition opportunities. The hosts held a slim 22-21 lead after ten minutes, and the game remained tight through the second quarter. A late Panathinaikos surge gave the home side a 44-41 halftime advantage.

The decisive stretch came in the third quarter. Panathinaikos opened the second half with a 10-0 run, turning a narrow lead into a double-digit cushion. Baskonia responded with a run of its own behind Markus Howard’s shot-making, but the visitors could never fully close the gap. Panathinaikos controlled the final five minutes with timely stops and efficient free-throw shooting.

Key Moments

Panathinaikos’ third-quarter burst changed the complexion of the game. A steal-and-layup from Jerian Grant capped the 10-0 run and forced Baskonia into a timeout. Later, with Baskonia threatening to cut the lead to three in the fourth quarter, Mathias Lessort delivered a crucial offensive rebound and put-back to steady the hosts. Nunn then knocked down a contested mid-range jumper to push the lead back to eight with under two minutes left.

• Panathinaikos outscored Baskonia 24-16 in the third quarter.
• The hosts dominated points in the paint 44-28.
• Baskonia shot 11-of-34 from three-point range.
• Panathinaikos committed only 10 turnovers.

Tactical Story

Panathinaikos’ interior advantage was the defining tactical theme. Lessort and the frontcourt consistently punished Baskonia inside, both in half-court sets and on the offensive glass. The hosts also used Nunn’s gravity to create driving lanes, forcing Baskonia into help rotations that opened up cutters and second-chance opportunities.

Baskonia relied heavily on perimeter shooting, but the three-ball was not falling consistently enough to offset Panathinaikos’ paint production. Defensively, Baskonia tried to pressure the ball and speed up the game, but Panathinaikos handled the pressure well and finished with a comfortable assist-to-turnover ratio. The visitors’ late surge was not enough to overcome the third-quarter deficit.

Standout Players

• Kendrick Nunn (Panathinaikos): 24 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, leading the home attack.
• Mathias Lessort (Panathinaikos): 16 points and 10 rebounds, with several key offensive boards.
• Jerian Grant (Panathinaikos): 12 points, 6 assists and strong perimeter defense.
• Markus Howard (Baskonia): 20 points, keeping the visitors within striking distance.
• Chima Moneke (Baskonia): 14 points and 8 rebounds in a physical performance.
• Tadas Sedekerskis (Baskonia): 11 points and 7 rebounds, providing energy on both ends.

Season Impact

The win strengthened Panathinaikos’ position in the EuroLeague standings and reinforced the team’s home-court advantage at OAKA. For Baskonia, the loss was a missed opportunity to steal a road result against one of the competition’s strongest rosters. The Spanish club will need more consistency from its perimeter shooting in the coming rounds, while Panathinaikos will take confidence from a controlled performance on both ends.

With Nunn scoring efficiently and Lessort controlling the paint, Panathinaikos showed the balance that makes them a serious EuroLeague contender. The 85-79 result was not a blowout, but it was a mature, professional win.
