Rigas Zelli survived a tense EuroCup Basketball battle on October 1, 2026, defeating Derthona Basket 86-84 in a game that went down to the final possession. The Latvian hosts led for much of the night, but Derthona’s late surge made it a nail-biting finish in Riga.

Match Overview

Rigas Zelli started strongly, using patient half-court offense and sharp perimeter shooting to take an early advantage. Derthona Basket, known for their physical style, responded with drives and offensive rebounds, keeping the game close throughout the first half. Neither team could build a truly comfortable lead, and the score remained tight heading into the final quarter.

The fourth period turned into a tactical chess match. Rigas Zelli tried to slow the pace and force Derthona into late-clock shots, while the Italian visitors increased their defensive pressure and looked to create turnovers. In the end, the hosts made just enough plays at the free-throw line and came up with a crucial defensive stop to seal the two-point win.

Key Moments

• Opening exchanges: Rigas Zelli hit early three-pointers, while Derthona answered with powerful interior scoring.
• Second-quarter momentum: Derthona briefly took the lead after a run of offensive rebounds, but Rigas Zelli closed the half with a timely basket.
• Third-quarter separation: The hosts opened a small gap by mixing up their defenses and converting steals into transition points.
• Final minute: With the score tied or within one possession, Rigas Zelli made clutch free throws, and Derthona’s potential tying shot rimmed out in the closing seconds.

Tactical Breakdown

Rigas Zelli’s game plan focused on ball movement and shot selection. They refused to rush against Derthona’s half-court defense, often using multiple pick-and-roll actions to create mismatches. When Derthona switched, Rigas Zelli attacked the paint; when the defense dropped, they punished it with jump shots. That versatility kept the Italian side guessing for most of the night.

Derthona Basket stayed in the game through toughness. They won several 50-50 balls and generated extra possessions on the offensive glass. Their half-court defense also improved as the game wore on, but costly turnovers in the final minutes prevented them from completing the comeback. In a game decided by two points, those small mistakes made the difference.

Standout Performances

Rigas Zelli’s frontcourt delivered a strong two-way performance, protecting the rim and scoring efficiently in the paint. Their guards also controlled the tempo, especially in the fourth quarter, when the hosts needed calm decision-making. A wing player provided timely outside shooting, helping Rigas Zelli maintain spacing against Derthona’s aggressive defense.

For Derthona Basket, the backcourt led the fight. Their guards attacked the basket relentlessly and created open looks for teammates. A forward was particularly effective on the offensive boards, giving Derthona second-chance opportunities. Despite the loss, the Italians showed the kind of resilience that should serve them well in the EuroCup regular season.

Season Impact

Rigas Zelli move to 1-0 with a narrow but valuable home win. The plus-two point differential may not be decisive on its own, but every victory in EuroCup Basketball matters, especially in a competitive regular-season field. Derthona Basket leave with a loss but also with confidence, having pushed a strong home side to the final possession. Both clubs will look to sharpen their late-game execution in the next round.
