Derthona Basket 89, San Pablo Burgos 79 — Derthona Basket earned a hard-fought 89-79 EuroCup Basketball victory over San Pablo Burgos, using a dominant third quarter and a balanced offensive attack to secure the win at home. The Italian side trailed briefly in the first half but took control after the break and held off Burgos’ late resistance.

Match overview

The opening quarter was played at a brisk pace, with both teams finding success in the paint and from mid-range. Burgos moved the ball well and took an early lead, but Derthona stayed close through offensive rebounding and aggressive drives. The first half ended with Derthona holding a slim advantage, setting up a second half that promised to be decided by adjustments and execution.

Derthona delivered the decisive blow in the third quarter. A 15-4 run, powered by defensive stops and quick transition baskets, turned a tight game into a double-digit lead. Burgos fought back in the fourth, cutting the deficit to six with under four minutes remaining, but Derthona responded with a timely three-pointer and a pair of free throws to seal the result.

Key moments

• Third-quarter surge: Derthona’s 15-4 run changed the complexion of the game and forced Burgos to play catch-up basketball.
• Burgos’ late rally: The Spanish side cut the lead to six in the final quarter, briefly threatening to steal the game.
• Clutch response: Derthona’s veteran guard hit a contested three and followed it with free throws to restore control in the closing minutes.

Tactical story

Derthona’s offense was built on inside-out play. The hosts established a post presence early, forcing Burgos to collapse its defense and opening up perimeter shots. When Burgos switched to a smaller lineup, Derthona attacked the offensive glass relentlessly, generating second-chance points that proved crucial in the final margin.

Defensively, Derthona adjusted well after a shaky first quarter. The hosts began switching more aggressively on ball screens, disrupting Burgos’ pick-and-roll rhythm and forcing the visitors into isolation plays. Burgos still found some success through individual shot-making, but Derthona’s team defense tightened in the third quarter, holding Burgos to a low shooting percentage during the decisive run.

Burgos’ own defensive effort was uneven. The Spanish side struggled to contain dribble penetration and gave up too many offensive rebounds, particularly in the second half. Offensively, Burgos moved the ball well at times but settled for contested threes when the paint was closed off.

Standout performers

Derthona’s Matteo Ferrero led all scorers with 21 points, mixing efficient three-point shooting with aggressive drives. He was particularly effective in the third quarter, scoring eight points during the decisive run. Center Luca Bianchi added 13 points and 10 rebounds, anchoring the paint and giving Derthona a physical edge on the glass.

For San Pablo Burgos, guard Alejandro Ruiz finished with 17 points and five assists, keeping his team within striking distance with timely shot-making. Forward Diego Moreno contributed 12 points and seven rebounds, but Burgos’ supporting cast struggled to find consistency against Derthona’s pressure. The visitors’ bench was outscored, a factor that became more pronounced as the game wore on.

Season impact and standings picture

The victory gives Derthona Basket an important home win in the EuroCup Basketball standings and reinforces their credentials as a team capable of competing for a knockout-phase spot. The Italian side’s balance—inside scoring, perimeter shooting, and offensive rebounding—makes them a difficult matchup. Burgos, meanwhile, will look to correct its second-half defensive lapses and rebounding issues before the next round.

Derthona’s ability to respond to Burgos’ late run was particularly encouraging. In a competition where momentum swings are common, closing out tight games at home is essential. The Italian club will hope this performance serves as a blueprint for the rest of the campaign.
