BK Liepajas Lauvas made home advantage count in the Estonia and Latvia Basketball League, defeating RBS Rigas Juniori 98-88 in a high-scoring contest that was far tighter than the final margin suggests. The Latvian side pulled away in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, turning a five-point game into a ten-point win with composed free-throw shooting and timely defensive stops.

A competitive first half

The opening quarter was fast and open, with both teams happy to trade baskets in transition. Liepajas Lauvas edged ahead 26-22 thanks to a late three-pointer, but RBS Rigas Juniori responded well in the second period, using their quick guards to attack the rim and cut into the deficit. At halftime the hosts led 50-43, a lead built more on shooting efficiency than any defensive dominance.

RBS's young squad showed impressive composure on the road, refusing to let the game slip away when Lauvas threatened to break clear.

Key moments

The third quarter belonged to RBS. A 9-2 run midway through the period brought them within three points at 66-63, and the momentum briefly shifted toward the visitors. Liepajas Lauvas steadied themselves with a pair of inside baskets, but the game remained alive heading into the final ten minutes.

The decisive passage came with just under four minutes remaining. Leading 86-81, Lauvas produced a 7-0 burst — a corner three followed by two defensive stops that turned into transition points — to push the lead to twelve. RBS kept fighting, but the clock became their opponent as much as the home defense.

Tactical story

Rebounding and physicality were the difference. Liepajas Lauvas won the battle on the boards, particularly on the offensive end, where second-chance points repeatedly punished RBS's smaller lineup. The hosts also used their size to draw fouls in the paint, reaching the free-throw line frequently in the fourth quarter.

RBS Rigas Juniori played with real pace and ingenuity, moving the ball quickly and finding open shooters from the perimeter. Their up-tempo style kept them in the game, but they were ultimately undone by a handful of costly turnovers in the closing stretch and an inability to slow the hosts' interior scoring.

• Rebounds: a clear advantage for Liepajas Lauvas, generating crucial extra possessions.
• Free throws: the hosts' late-game accuracy from the line protected the lead.
• Turnovers: RBS's late miscues proved the most expensive moments of the night.

Standout performers

Liepajas Lauvas were led by a strong all-round team effort, with their frontcourt controlling the paint and their guards managing the tempo intelligently down the stretch. RBS Rigas Juniori's backcourt was excellent for long stretches, combining quick penetration with accurate outside shooting, and their development in the Estonia and Latvia Basketball League will be one to watch.

What it means

The win keeps BK Liepajas Lauvas on track in the Estonia and Latvia Basketball League, where home results against developing sides like RBS are essential to maintaining a strong league record. Their ability to close out a tight game in the fourth quarter is a promising sign for the months ahead.

For RBS Rigas Juniori, the performance offered plenty of encouragement despite the defeat. Competing with a more experienced opponent for three quarters on the road shows genuine progress, and tightening their late-game execution could turn similar performances into victories.
