GasTerra Flames Groningen Roll Past Voluntari 90-71 in ENBL

GasTerra Flames Groningen delivered a commanding home performance in the European North Basketball League, defeating Voluntari 90-71 on October 28, 2026. A fast start and a deep, balanced scoring effort carried the Dutch side to a 19-point win.

The result underlined Groningen’s strength on their home floor and gave them a significant boost in the ENBL campaign, while Voluntari were left chasing the game after a difficult opening quarter.

How the game unfolded

• First quarter: Groningen 24-15 Voluntari
• Second quarter: Groningen 22-20 Voluntari
• Third quarter: Groningen 19-16 Voluntari
• Fourth quarter: Groningen 25-20 Voluntari
• Final score: Groningen 90-71 Voluntari

Groningen came out with purpose, moving the ball quickly and attacking the paint before kicking out to open shooters. They led 24-15 after the first quarter and maintained a comfortable cushion through halftime at 46-35. Voluntari improved in patches, but they struggled to contain Groningen’s transition game and gave up too many clean looks from beyond the arc.

The third quarter was more controlled, with Groningen adding three points to their lead at 65-51. Any hopes of a Voluntari comeback were effectively ended early in the fourth, when the hosts produced another scoring burst to push the margin beyond 20 points.

Key moments and tactical edge

The defining run came in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Groningen converted defensive stops into quick baskets, including a pair of fast-break finishes and a three-pointer that brought the home crowd into the game. Voluntari called timeout, but the momentum had already shifted decisively.

Groningen’s defensive pressure forced Voluntari into hurried possessions and contested shots. The Dutch side also dominated the defensive glass, limiting second-chance points and allowing their guards to push the pace. Offensively, Groningen shared the ball well and finished with a healthy assist-to-turnover ratio.

Standout performers

Dwayne Coleman led Groningen with 19 points, consistently breaking down Voluntari’s perimeter defense. Milan van der Meer recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds, controlling the interior on both ends, while Ruud de Vries added 12 points and several key assists.

Voluntari were led by Andrei Popescu with 18 points and Cristian Ionescu with 13, but the Romanian side lacked the depth to match Groningen’s balanced attack over four quarters.

What the result means

For GasTerra Flames Groningen, the win is a statement of intent in the European North Basketball League and a reward for their home-court consistency. Voluntari will need to regroup defensively, particularly in transition, as they continue their ENBL schedule.
