UPB Gandia 67-59 Molina Basket: Hosts Grind Out Copa del Rey Victory

UPB Gandia advanced in the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto with a hard-fought 67-59 win over Molina Basket, in a tie decided by defensive discipline and a decisive fourth-quarter push. It was not a vintage offensive display, but it was a professional one — exactly what cup basketball demands.

The eight-point margin was built over forty grinding minutes, with neither side ever fully breaking free. Gandia's ability to control the tempo and execute in the closing stretch ultimately proved the difference between two well-matched opponents.

Match Overview

The first quarter was a defensive affair. Both teams prioritised protecting the paint, and scoring opportunities came at a premium. Molina Basket's zone look caused early problems for the hosts, who settled for perimeter shots rather than attacking the gaps that the defence offered.

By half-time the game was still tight, with the lead changing hands several times. The third quarter produced the best basketball of the night: a quick exchange of runs that ended with Gandia holding a slender advantage heading into the final period. That was when the home side's experience showed, as they tightened defensively and converted their chances at the other end.

Key Moments

• Defensive adjustment: Gandia abandoned a passive perimeter approach and began attacking the zone with penetration and inside passing.
• Third-quarter spurt: A short run gave the hosts a cushion they would not surrender.
• Rebounding edge: Critical defensive boards in the fourth quarter limited Molina's second-chance opportunities.
• Free throws down the stretch: Gandia converted under pressure to keep the lead at arm's length.

Tactical Story

Copa del Rey basketball tends to reward teams who defend with discipline, and this tie was no exception. Gandia's half-court defence was organised and physical, contesting shots and closing driving lanes. Their offensive approach was patient, if occasionally laboured, and they generated their best sequences by working the ball inside before kicking it out.

Molina Basket were competitive throughout and will feel they had chances. Their offensive spacing was good in the first half, but as the game tightened they relied increasingly on individual plays, which made it easier for Gandia to defend. Turnovers in the fourth quarter ultimately proved costly.

Standout Performers

The hosts' frontcourt set the tone, winning the rebounding battle and providing a consistent interior scoring threat. Their guards managed the game well, particularly in the closing minutes, taking care of the ball and making smart decisions in traffic. For Molina Basket, the perimeter defence and transition play were encouraging, and their leading scorers kept the tie competitive into the final quarter.

What It Means

Knockout competitions offer no second chances, and UPB Gandia will simply be pleased to be in the next round. The manner of the win — a low-scoring, defensively controlled contest — suggests a team built for cup basketball, where grit often matters more than style.

Molina Basket exit with a performance that showed real promise, particularly over the first three quarters. Improving late-game execution and reducing turnovers will be the priority as they return to league action, where a run of consistent results could quickly turn this cup disappointment into a distant memory.

Looking Ahead

Gandia's reward is another demanding tie, and they will need to find more offensive rhythm if they are to keep progressing. The defensive foundation is there, though, and in the Copa del Rey that is often the most valuable asset a team can carry.
