Ponfelada 79-70 Club Peixegalego Basket: Hosts Pull Clear After the Break in Copa del Rey de Baloncesto Tie

Ponfelada booked their place in the next round of the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto with a composed 79-70 victory over Club Peixegalego Basket, turning a tight, nervy cup tie into a controlled nine-point win in front of a loud home crowd. A decisive 24-14 third quarter proved to be the difference, as the home side finally found rhythm on offense and locked down the defensive glass just as the visitors were threatening to steal the momentum.

The result keeps Ponfelada's cup run alive and hands Club Peixegalego Basket a frustrating exit, one built on a slow start to the second half that they never fully recovered from. For a knockout competition where margins are thin and one bad stretch can end a season, that ten-minute spell after the interval was everything.

Match Overview

The opening exchanges set the tone for what was, for long stretches, a genuinely even contest. Both teams traded baskets early, with Ponfelada leaning on their half-court execution while Club Peixegalego Basket pushed the tempo in transition and looked comfortable shooting from the perimeter. The first quarter ended 21-18 to the hosts, a lead built more on efficiency than on volume.

The second quarter belonged to the visitors. Club Peixegalego Basket tightened their pick-and-roll coverage, forced a handful of rushed shots and finished the half strongly, edging the period 20-18. At the break the scoreboard read 39-38 to Ponfelada, and the cup upset was very much alive.

Quarter-by-Quarter Breakdown

• First quarter: Ponfelada 21-18 — early control, good ball movement, efficient shooting inside the arc.
• Second quarter: Club Peixegalego Basket 20-18 — the visitors' best spell, built on pressure defense and quick transition points.
• Third quarter: Ponfelada 24-14 — the game-breaking run, sparked by defensive stops and second-chance baskets.
• Fourth quarter: Club Peixegalego Basket 18-16 — a late push that trimmed the deficit but never seriously threatened the lead.

Key Moments

The defining stretch arrived midway through the third quarter. With Ponfelada leading by just three, the hosts strung together a 12-2 run that swung the game from uncomfortable to commanding. It started with a pair of defensive stands — a blocked shot at the rim followed by a drawn charge — and turned into easy points at the other end. By the time Club Peixegalego Basket called timeout, the deficit had ballooned into double digits and the home crowd was fully engaged.

Credit to the visitors, they responded. A quick 7-0 burst early in the fourth quarter cut the gap back to single figures and briefly made the closing minutes interesting. But Ponfelada's response was measured rather than panicked: two patient possessions ending in free throws, followed by a corner three that effectively sealed the outcome with under three minutes remaining.

Tactical Story

This was a game decided in the paint and on the glass. Ponfelada's size advantage told after halftime, when they began attacking the offensive boards aggressively and converting second-chance opportunities into points. That rebounding edge also limited Club Peixegalego Basket's transition game, which had been their most dangerous weapon in the first half.

Defensively, Ponfelada switched more readily in the second half, disrupting the visitors' pick-and-roll actions and forcing them into contested mid-range attempts late in the shot clock. Club Peixegalego Basket shot the ball well enough from deep to stay in touch, but they could not generate enough clean looks in the third quarter, and that imbalance proved decisive.

Standout Performances

Ponfelada's frontcourt set the physical tone, controlling the defensive glass and finishing efficiently around the rim, while their backcourt managed the game intelligently down the stretch — protecting the ball, drawing fouls and taking good shots when the pressure was highest.

For Club Peixegalego Basket, the perimeter duo that carried them through the second quarter was the clear bright spot. Their shot-making kept the visitors within touching distance for three quarters, and their late push showed the character of a team that refused to fold on the road.

What It Means

For Ponfelada, this is a result to build on. Cup competitions reward teams that defend, rebound and stay calm in the closing minutes, and they checked all three boxes in the second half. Progressing in the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto also brings momentum back into league play, where confidence matters as much as form.

For Club Peixegalego Basket, the disappointment will centre on that third-quarter lapse. They matched their hosts for 30 minut
