CB Clavijo produced a composed, control-oriented performance to beat Iraurgi SB 75-60 in the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto on Sunday evening. Unlike a nail-biting finish, this one was built on defensive discipline and a steady, methodical offensive approach that gradually squeezed the life out of the visitors.

Match overview

CB Clavijo set the tone early. The hosts came out with high intensity on the defensive end, contesting every shot and forcing Iraurgi SB into difficult, low-percentage attempts. Offensively, Clavijo moved the ball well, creating open looks through patient ball movement rather than rushed individual play.

The first half followed a clear pattern: Iraurgi stayed within touching distance but never managed to seize control. Every time they trimmed the deficit, Clavijo answered — often through a well-executed set play or a timely offensive rebound. By the interval, the home side had established a working lead and, more importantly, a grip on the rhythm of the game.

The third quarter is where the contest effectively tilted. Clavijo opened the period with a decisive run, extending their advantage into double digits and forcing Iraurgi into uncomfortable, hurried possessions. From that point, the visitors were chasing the game rather than dictating it.

Key moments

• Opening quarter: CB Clavijo's early defensive pressure disrupted Iraurgi's half-court sets and set the tone for the night.
• Early third quarter: A sustained scoring run pushed the lead into double figures and forced an Iraurgi timeout.
• Mid-fourth quarter: Iraurgi attempted a comeback with a flurry of quick baskets, but Clavijo responded immediately at the other end.
• Closing minutes: Clavijo controlled the tempo, drained the clock, and converted free throws to close out the 15-point win.

Tactical story

This was a game won on the defensive end. CB Clavijo's ability to protect the paint and close out on shooters limited Iraurgi SB's efficiency across all four quarters. The visitors never found a consistent offensive identity, alternating between perimeter attempts and forced interior drives without ever establishing a reliable source of points.

On offense, Clavijo's balance was the standout feature. Rather than relying on one dominant scorer, they spread the production across the rotation, punishing Iraurgi's help defense with accurate passing and smart cutting. Their control of the defensive glass also eliminated second-chance points, a factor that proved crucial in maintaining a comfortable cushion.

Standout performers

For the winners, the guard rotation managed the game superbly, balancing tempo with shot selection and keeping turnovers low. The frontcourt contributed strong minutes on the boards and defended the rim effectively, while the bench maintained the intensity level without any noticeable drop-off.

Iraurgi SB will be disappointed with the offensive output, but there were positives: their effort never wavered, and their perimeter defense created a few transition opportunities. The problem was consistency — brief good spells were not enough against a team as organized as Clavijo.

Cup and season impact

The 75-60 victory sends CB Clavijo through with confidence and momentum, a valuable commodity in a knockout competition where the next round can arrive quickly. Winning by fifteen points also matters for squad belief: it shows the team can control a game from start to finish, not just survive tight finishes.

For Iraurgi SB, the result is a setback, but the cup format offers lessons rather than long-term damage. Restoring offensive fluidity and finding more reliable scoring options will be the focus as they return to league action.
