The visitors built their win on a strong first half and, crucially, had enough in the tank to answer every Essex run down the stretch.

With both teams pushing the tempo and combining for 181 points, it was a game that showcased the attacking quality and entertainment value that the Commonwealth Basketball Games has quickly become known for.

Match Overview

• Competition: Commonwealth Basketball Games
• Match: Essex Rebels vs Hemel Storm
• Final score: 88–93
• Quarter splits: 22–25, 20–23, 24–20, 22–25

Hemel Storm took the first quarter 25–22 and the second 23–20, opening a six-point half-time advantage that would ultimately prove just enough. Essex responded impressively in the third quarter, winning it 24–20 to cut the gap to two, but the visitors reasserted control in the final ten minutes.

Key Moments

The game's decisive sequence came midway through the fourth quarter. With Essex within one possession and the home crowd rising, Hemel produced a composed offensive set, a defensive stop, and a fast-break basket to push the lead back to five. The Rebels had chances to close the gap further but were undone by a turnover and a pair of missed free throws in the final two minutes.

Hemel's late-game execution — smart clock management, disciplined shot selection, and effective foul-line shooting — was the difference in a fixture where both teams scored at a high rate.

Standout Performances

Hemel Storm's backcourt controlled the rhythm of the game, mixing direct drives with patient perimeter ball movement. Their ability to score in the mid-range and around the rim consistently broke Essex's defensive shape.

The Rebels' fightback was built on their own aggressive attacking play. Essex found success when they pushed the pace and attacked in transition, turning defence into quick points. Their third-quarter surge briefly swung momentum entirely, and they will take heart from the way they competed to the final whistle.

Season Impact

For Hemel Storm, this is a valuable road win against a competitive opponent — the kind of result that builds resilience and reinforces the belief that they can close out tight games. Executing under pressure is often the difference between a good group and a genuinely dangerous one.

Essex Rebels leave the game with positives despite the defeat. An 88-point night shows they have the firepower to compete with anyone in the competition; tightening up defensively and cutting late turnovers will be the priority in the sessions ahead.

What's Next

Both teams now look ahead to their next Commonwealth Basketball Games fixtures. Hemel Storm will aim to carry their late-game composure forward, while Essex Rebels will be seeking to convert strong attacking performances into results. On the evidence of this 181-point contest, both sides remain well worth watching.
