Sporting CP Women secured a convincing 74-61 win over CP Esgueira Women on Saturday 26 September 2026 in the Club Friendship competition, using a dominant third quarter to pull clear of a resilient opponent. The 13-point margin reflected a controlled, professional performance from the Lisbon club.

Sporting CP are one of the established powers of Portuguese women's basketball, and this outing showed why: disciplined defense, balanced scoring and the ability to raise their level when the game needed deciding.

Match overview

The first half was a genuine contest. CP Esgueira Women, based in the Aveiro district and long respected for their work in developing Portuguese women's basketball talent, matched Sporting blow for blow early on. Their guards were aggressive, their ball movement was purposeful, and they trailed by only a handful of points at the interval.

The third quarter changed everything. Sporting CP Women opened the second half with a surge that stretched the lead into double figures, and Esgueira were never able to claw it back.

Key moments

• First quarter: A cagey, low-scoring start, with both teams trading baskets and neither able to establish separation.
• Second quarter: Sporting edged ahead with better rebounding and a couple of momentum-shifting three-pointers before the break.
• Third quarter: The decisive stretch — a sustained 14-4 run driven by defensive stops and quick transition offense.
• Fourth quarter: Esgueira pushed hard and trimmed the deficit to nine, but Sporting's composure at the free-throw line sealed the result.

Tactical story

Sporting's advantage came from their size and physicality inside. They won the rebounding battle convincingly, limited Esgueira to one shot on most possessions and generated second-chance points that proved crucial in a game where open looks were at a premium.

Esgueira's approach was intelligent — spread the floor, attack mismatches and shoot the three — and it kept them competitive for long stretches. The problem was efficiency: when the outside shot stopped falling in the third quarter, they had few alternative routes to scoring against a well-organised defense.

Standout performers

Sporting's frontcourt controlled the paint at both ends, protecting the rim and finishing efficiently around the basket. Their perimeter players managed the game well, particularly in the closing minutes when Esgueira were forced to foul. For CP Esgueira Women, the backcourt and wing players were the standout performers, showing the attacking intent that has become the club's trademark.

What it means

For Sporting CP Women, this is another positive step in a season with genuine ambitions on multiple fronts. The manner of the win — built on defense and rebounding rather than a hot shooting night — will be particularly pleasing to the coaching staff. CP Esgueira Women can take encouragement from a competitive display against one of the strongest sides in the country, and their young core will benefit from exposure to this level of opponent.

Final result: Sporting CP Women 74 - 61 CP Esgueira Women.
