Kangoeroes Mechelen vs Leeuwarden: Leeuwarden Roll to 92-73 Club Friendship Win

Leeuwarden produced a dominant 92-73 victory over Kangoeroes Mechelen in a Club Friendship exhibition game on September 20, 2026. The Dutch side controlled the contest from the opening tip, using sharp shooting and relentless pace to overwhelm their Belgian hosts.

Match Overview

Leeuwarden came out firing, opening the game with a 10-0 run and never looking back. Their ball movement was crisp, and their three-point shooting was exceptional in the first half. Kangoeroes Mechelen struggled to find offensive rhythm early, and by the end of the first quarter, Leeuwarden led 25-18.

The second quarter followed a similar pattern. Leeuwarden stretched the lead to 47-37 by halftime, capitalizing on Mechelen’s turnovers and missed rotations. The quarter-by-quarter scores were 18-25, 19-22, 20-20, and 16-25, showing that Leeuwarden maintained their intensity for the full forty minutes.

Key Moments

Mechelen made a brief push in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 48-42 behind a series of inside baskets. But Leeuwarden responded with a devastating 17-2 run that spanned the end of the third and the start of the fourth. That burst effectively ended the game as a contest.

Leeuwarden’s bench also played a crucial role, outscoring Mechelen’s reserves 34-18. The visitors’ energy never dropped, and their transition offense repeatedly caught Mechelen flat-footed. By the final five minutes, Leeuwarden were comfortably in control.

Tactical Story

Leeuwarden’s offensive philosophy was clear: push the pace, spread the floor, and shoot threes. They attempted 34 three-pointers and made 14 of them, a 41.2% clip that kept Mechelen’s defense stretched. Mechelen tried to counter with a bigger lineup, but that only made them slower in transition, and Leeuwarden exploited the mismatch repeatedly.

Mechelen’s half-court offense was stagnant at times. They relied heavily on isolation plays and struggled to generate open looks against Leeuwarden’s switching defense. Their 15 turnovers were particularly costly, as Leeuwarden converted them into 22 points. Rebounding was also a problem; Leeuwarden won the battle on the boards 38-29, including 11 offensive rebounds.

Standout Players

• David Michaels (Leeuwarden): 23 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds. He orchestrated the offense and hit several deep threes.
• Lars van der Berg (Leeuwarden): 16 points and 10 rebounds. A dominant double-double in the paint.
• Domien Loubry (Kangoeroes Mechelen): 18 points and 4 assists. He was Mechelen’s most reliable scoring option.
• Vincent Kesteloot (Kangoeroes Mechelen): 14 points and 6 rebounds. He provided a spark off the bench but couldn’t stem the tide.

Season Impact

Club Friendship games are designed for preparation, but the margin of victory will give Leeuwarden significant confidence heading into their competitive schedule. For Kangoeroes Mechelen, the loss highlights areas to address: transition defense, ball security, and defensive rebounding. Exhibition or not, a 19-point home defeat is a wake-up call. Mechelen will need to tighten up quickly as the season approaches, while Leeuwarden can build on a performance that was impressive on both ends of the floor.
