The game was a back-and-forth affair featuring 14 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than eight points. In a contest that felt like a playoff game, Akademik Plovdiv's poise in the final minute proved decisive.

Match Overview

CSKA Sofia entered the game with a reputation for aggressive perimeter defense, while Akademik Plovdiv boasted one of the most efficient half-court offenses in the competition. Both strengths were on display: CSKA forced 15 turnovers, but Plovdiv shot 48% from the field and 40% from three-point range. The rebounding battle was even at 34-34, but Plovdiv's 12 offensive rebounds led to 16 second-chance points, a critical edge in such a tight game.

Free-throw shooting also played a role: Akademik Plovdiv went 18-of-22 from the line, while CSKA Sofia managed just 12-of-19. That six-point differential ultimately covered the final margin.

How the Game Unfolded

• First quarter: CSKA Sofia raced out to an 18-10 lead behind three early three-pointers from their shooting guard. Plovdiv called timeout and steadied the ship.
• Second quarter: Akademik Plovdiv responded with a 19-8 run to take a 35-30 lead. Their zone defense confused CSKA's ball-handlers, leading to five turnovers in the period.
• Third quarter: The teams traded baskets for most of the period. CSKA regained a 58-55 lead heading into the fourth, thanks to a buzzer-beating jumper.
• Fourth quarter: With the game tied at 78-78 and 14 seconds left, Plovdiv's point guard drove baseline and hit a contested floater. CSKA's final three-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer.

Standout Performers

Akademik Plovdiv were led by shooting guard Georgi Dimitrov, who scored 22 points, including four three-pointers, and added five rebounds. Point guard Hristo Ivanov ran the offense beautifully with 14 points, nine assists, and only two turnovers. Forward Nikolay Petrov added 12 points and eight rebounds, while center Dimitar Georgiev chipped in 10 points and seven boards.

CSKA Sofia got a game-high 24 points from small forward Ivan Stoyanov, who also grabbed six rebounds. Guard Vasil Petkov added 16 points and five assists, and big man Borislav Todorov recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. CSKA's bench scored just 11 points, and their late-game execution faltered.

Tactical Story

CSKA Sofia's aggressive help defense forced Plovdiv into early turnovers, but Plovdiv adjusted by using more ball screens and backdoor cuts. Defensively, Plovdiv's 2-3 zone in the second quarter changed the game's momentum, holding CSKA to just 12 points in that period. In crunch time, Plovdiv isolated their point guard at the top of the key and let him create, a strategy that paid off with the game-winning floater. CSKA had a chance to win but settled for a contested three instead of attacking the rim.
