Academica Coimbra claimed an 84-75 victory over Uniao de Leiria on Saturday 26 September 2026 in the Club Friendship competition, delivering a composed fourth-quarter performance to see off their Portuguese rivals. The nine-point margin flattered neither side in what was a hard-fought, defensively engaged contest.

Club Friendship fixtures bring together clubs from across the Portuguese basketball scene in a competitive but collegial setting, and this meeting between two historic institutions had the feel of a proper derby despite the friendly framing.

Match overview

Academica Coimbra — one of Portugal's most recognisable multisport clubs — started the brighter of the two teams, using patient half-court offense to build a narrow lead through the first quarter. Uniao de Leiria responded with a more direct approach, attacking off the dribble and drawing fouls to keep the scoreboard ticking.

The game remained within a single-digit margin for the majority of the night, with neither side able to land a decisive blow until the final six minutes, when Academica found the run they needed.

Key moments

• Opening quarter: Academica's ball movement created open looks on the wing and generated a small early cushion.
• Second quarter: Leiria fought back level with an 8-0 burst, forcing Academica into a timeout and a tactical adjustment.
• Third quarter: A tight, low-scoring period in which both defenses dominated and turnovers were traded freely.
• Fourth quarter: Academica's decisive stretch — a 13-3 run built on defensive stops and transition baskets — put the game beyond reach.

Tactical story

The contest was decided at the defensive end. Academica's ability to switch screens and stay in front of Leiria's guards limited penetration in the second half, forcing contested jumpers and long rebounds. Their rebounding on the defensive glass allowed them to control tempo without needing to force the issue on offense.

Uniao de Leiria's best moments came when they pushed the pace and got to the rim before the defense was set. When the game slowed into half-court basketball, however, they struggled to generate clean looks, and that was the difference over 40 minutes.

Standout performers

Academica's guards controlled the game down the stretch, making good decisions in pick-and-roll situations and converting at the free-throw line when Leiria were forced to foul. Their interior players held their own on the boards against a physical opponent. Leiria's leading scorers kept their team in contention deep into the fourth quarter, and their effort levels never dropped.

What it means

For Academica Coimbra, this is a confidence-building result and a useful marker of where the squad stands ahead of the competitive campaign. For Uniao de Leiria, the performance contained plenty of positives — a competitive road display against a well-drilled opponent — but also a reminder that late-game execution decides tight basketball games.

Final result: Academica Coimbra 84 - 75 Uniao de Leiria.
