Morphou produced one of the grittiest results of the early Cypriot Basketball Division A season on October 25, 2026, holding off Anorthosis Famagusta 76-74 in a game that was decided in the final minute. The home side trailed early, survived a third-quarter surge from the visitors and made just enough plays at both ends to secure a two-point win.

A tense night in Division A

The matchup had the feel of a playoff game rather than a regular-season fixture. Anorthosis Famagusta, one of the most recognized clubs in Cypriot basketball, started with better rhythm and led 20-18 after the first quarter. Morphou responded in the second, tightening its half-court defense and getting cleaner looks in the paint to take a 39-37 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was a grind. Anorthosis reclaimed momentum with an 8-0 run midway through the period and briefly forced Morphou into a series of hurried perimeter shots. The teams entered the final quarter tied at 56-56, setting up a finish that came down to execution, rebounding and composure at the free-throw line.

Key moments

• Second-quarter surge: Morphou used a 10-2 run to turn an early deficit into a halftime lead, with back-to-back baskets in transition changing the tempo.
• Anorthosis answer: The visitors opened the third quarter with renewed pressure and tied the game late in the period, forcing Morphou to work deep into the shot clock on several possessions.
• Final minute: Morphou guard Andreas Christou hit a contested baseline jumper to put the hosts ahead 75-72. Anorthosis cut the gap to one with a quick basket, but Morphou secured the rebound after a missed three-pointer and added a free throw to seal it at 76-74.

Tactical story

Morphou’s game plan was built on control. The hosts slowed the pace, packed the paint and forced Anorthosis into contested jump shots. That approach limited easy transition baskets and made the visitors earn almost every point. Anorthosis won more offensive rebounds and created second-chance opportunities, but it struggled to convert consistently from the free-throw line, finishing 12-of-20.

On offense, Morphou leaned on patient ball movement and timely cuts. The hosts did not shoot the ball especially well from the perimeter, but they generated enough high-percentage looks near the rim and committed only nine turnovers. In a game separated by two points, that care with the basketball proved decisive.

Standout performers

Christou led Morphou with 18 points and six assists, repeatedly finding seams in Anorthosis’s defense during the second half. Forward Michalis Georgiou added 14 points and 12 rebounds, giving the hosts a crucial interior presence on both ends. For Anorthosis, guard Nikos Papadopoulos scored a game-high 22 points, while center Giorgos Andreou contributed 13 points and nine rebounds in a losing effort.

What the result means

The win gives Morphou valuable momentum in the Cypriot Basketball Division A standings and a notable head-to-head result against one of the league’s traditional contenders. For Anorthosis, the defeat is a reminder that road games in Division A are rarely straightforward. The visitors remain a dangerous side, but they will need better late-game execution and free-throw shooting as the season progresses.
