Dentacon Apoel Nicosia produced a commanding home performance in the Cypriot Basketball Division A, beating Achilleas KAChilleas 84-62 in Nicosia. The 22-point winning margin was built on a fast start, disciplined half-court defence and a balanced scoring effort that kept the visitors chasing the game from the opening minutes.

Apoel take control early

Apoel set the tone with a 22-14 first quarter, using aggressive perimeter defence to force Achilleas into contested shots. The home side moved the ball sharply in transition and found easy looks near the rim, while Achilleas struggled to establish any consistent inside presence. By halftime, Apoel had stretched the advantage to 42-30 and had already begun to dictate the tempo of the contest.

Quarter-by-quarter

• First quarter: Apoel 22-14
• Second quarter: Apoel 20-16
• Third quarter: Apoel 23-15
• Fourth quarter: Apoel 19-17
• Final score: Dentacon Apoel Nicosia 84-62 Achilleas KAChilleas

Defence turns pressure into points

The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when Apoel held Achilleas to 15 points while adding 23 of their own. The home side’s guards pressured the ball higher up the floor, forcing hurried passes and long rebounds that Apoel converted into second-chance opportunities. Achilleas improved slightly in the final period, but by then the game was already under firm control.

Apoel’s defensive rotations were particularly impressive in the paint. The hosts contested drives without overcommitting, and their help defenders repeatedly blocked passing lanes. That structure allowed Apoel to play with confidence at the other end, where they attacked the basket early in possessions rather than settling for low-percentage jump shots.

Standout performers

Apoel’s backcourt controlled the game on both ends, combining for timely perimeter shooting and steady ball movement. The frontcourt rotation gave the hosts a clear rebounding edge, especially on the offensive glass, and Apoel’s bench contributed valuable minutes without allowing the intensity to drop. For Achilleas, the effort remained visible until the final buzzer, but the visitors lacked the scoring balance needed to mount a serious comeback.

What the result means

The win strengthens Apoel’s position in the Cypriot Basketball Division A standings and reinforces their reputation as a difficult team to beat at home. For Achilleas, the defeat highlights the need for more consistent half-court execution, particularly when facing pressure defence. Apoel will look to carry the same defensive intensity into their next fixture, while Achilleas will focus on reducing turnovers and finding better shot quality early in possessions.
