The Guangzhou Loong Lions pulled off a gritty 86-82 upset over the Guangdong Southern Tigers in a hard-fought CBA clash at the Guangzhou Gymnasium. In a game defined by defense and clutch shot-making, the Loong Lions held off their more decorated rivals down the stretch to secure a memorable win in the Guangdong derby.

Match Overview

Guangdong entered the contest as favorites, but Guangzhou refused to be intimidated. The Loong Lions controlled the tempo early, using a patient half-court offense and aggressive perimeter defense to keep the Tigers off balance. The game was a throwback to old-school basketball: low scoring, physical, and decided in the final minutes.

Both teams struggled to find consistent offense, but Guangzhou’s ability to execute in crunch time made the difference. The win improves their standing in the CBA regular season and adds another chapter to the growing rivalry between the two southern clubs.

Key Moments

• First Quarter: Guangzhou edged ahead 22-20, with Chen Ying-Chun scoring 8 early points and setting the tone with his shooting.
• Second Quarter: Guangdong responded with a 22-20 run of their own, sending the game into halftime tied at 42-42.
• Third Quarter: The Loong Lions created separation with a 24-20 quarter, fueled by a 10-2 run midway through the period. Their import dominated the boards and altered several shots at the rim.
• Fourth Quarter: Guangdong cut the lead to two points with under three minutes left, but Guangzhou’s defense forced two critical turnovers. A clutch three-pointer from Cui Yongxi and two free throws sealed the win.

Tactical Story

Guangzhou’s defensive scheme was the story of the night. They packed the paint, dared Guangdong to shoot from outside, and rotated effectively to contest three-pointers. The Tigers shot just 31% from beyond the arc, a season-worst mark. On offense, the Loong Lions relied on ball movement and off-ball screens to generate open looks, rarely forcing bad shots.

Guangdong, missing a key starter due to injury, lacked their usual fluidity. Hu Mingxuan and Xu Jie combined for 35 points but received little help from the bench. The Tigers also committed 16 turnovers, many of which led to easy Guangzhou baskets. In a game decided by four points, those extra possessions were decisive.

Standout Players

• Guangzhou Loong Lions: Chen Ying-Chun led the way with 24 points and 6 assists, while Cui Yongxi added 18 points and 8 rebounds. Their import posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, anchoring the defense.
• Guangdong Southern Tigers: Hu Mingxuan scored 20 points, and Xu Jie had 15 points and 7 assists. Du Runwang chipped in 14 points, but their combined effort fell short.

Season Impact

The victory boosts Guangzhou’s playoff hopes and gives them a valuable head-to-head tiebreaker over Guangdong. It also proves they can compete with the CBA’s elite teams, a crucial confidence builder for a young roster. For Guangdong, the loss is a setback in their pursuit of a top-four seed and highlights the need for greater consistency on offense.

The two teams will meet again later in the season, and the Tigers will undoubtedly be seeking revenge. But for now, the Loong Lions can celebrate a statement win that will be remembered in the Guangdong derby for a long time.
