Guangdong Southern Tigers protected home court in the Chinese Basketball Association with an 86-77 victory over Ningbo Rockets. The Southern Tigers led for much of the night, but Ningbo remained competitive into the fourth quarter before Guangdong’s experience and rebounding strength sealed the result.

Guangdong build an early edge

Guangdong started brightly, taking a 24-19 lead after the first quarter behind aggressive drives and quick ball movement. The hosts stretched the advantage to 44-40 by halftime, with Ningbo staying within touch through timely three-point shooting and energy on the offensive glass. The game remained within single digits for long stretches, setting up a tense second half.

Quarter-by-quarter

• First quarter: Guangdong 24-19
• Second quarter: Ningbo 21-20
• Third quarter: Guangdong 22-18
• Fourth quarter: Guangdong 20-19
• Final score: Guangdong Southern Tigers 86-77 Ningbo Rockets

Key moments and tactical story

The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when Guangdong held Ningbo to 18 points while adding 22. The Southern Tigers increased their defensive pressure on the perimeter, forced Ningbo into contested mid-range attempts and controlled the defensive glass. That combination allowed Guangdong to push the tempo and create easier scoring chances in transition.

Ningbo refused to fade, cutting the deficit in the fourth quarter behind a series of confident perimeter shots. However, Guangdong’s half-court execution in the final five minutes proved superior. The hosts slowed the game down, attacked favourable matchups inside and converted key free throws to keep the Rockets at arm’s length.

Standout performers

Guangdong’s backcourt controlled the tempo and delivered important baskets when Ningbo threatened. The Southern Tigers’ frontcourt dominated the rebounding battle, particularly on the offensive end, creating extra possessions that proved crucial in a close game. Ningbo’s guards showed resilience and shooting range, but the Rockets lacked the same interior control.

What the result means

The win gives Guangdong Southern Tigers another important home result in the CBA and reinforces their depth and experience in tight contests. For Ningbo Rockets, the performance offered positives in terms of competitiveness and perimeter scoring, but the defeat highlights the need for stronger rebounding and late-game execution. Guangdong will look to maintain their defensive standards, while Ningbo will focus on closing out quarters more efficiently.
