London Lions Hold Off Cheshire Phoenix in 87-83 Road Win

The London Lions secured an important 87-83 road victory over the Cheshire Phoenix in British Super League Basketball action on October 19, 2026, using a composed finish and a strong defensive stretch in the second half to leave with the win. In a game that was tied at halftime, London’s ability to execute in the closing minutes proved the difference.

Cheshire Phoenix started with energy in front of their home crowd, but the Lions stayed within touching distance throughout the opening period. The teams traded leads early before London edged ahead late in the fourth quarter and held on through free throws and timely stops.

Match Overview

The contest was closely fought across the first two quarters, with neither side able to build a significant advantage. London’s balanced scoring and patient half-court offense kept the pressure on, while Cheshire relied on quick transition plays and perimeter shooting to stay level.

• Quarter scores: Cheshire Phoenix 21-22-18-22 — 83; London Lions 24-19-23-21 — 87
• Halftime: 43-43
• Three-quarter score: Cheshire 61, London 66
• Final: Cheshire Phoenix 83, London Lions 87

London’s third-quarter surge gave them a five-point cushion entering the final period, and that buffer proved just enough as Cheshire mounted a late comeback attempt.

Key Moments

The decisive sequence came in the final three minutes. Cheshire cut the deficit to 81-79 with a quick basket and a defensive stop, but London answered with a mid-range jumper and two clutch free throws to push the lead back to six. The Phoenix had one last chance to make it a one-possession game, but a contested three-pointer rimmed out, and London sealed the result at the line.

London also won the rebounding battle in the second half, limiting Cheshire’s second-chance points during the most important stretch of the game. That control on the glass allowed the Lions to slow the tempo and force Cheshire into difficult shots.

Tactical Story

London’s switching defense caused problems for Cheshire’s pick-and-roll attack, especially in the third quarter. The Lions forced several late-clock possessions and turned a pair of turnovers into transition points. Offensively, London attacked the paint early before kicking out to shooters when Cheshire collapsed on the ball.

Cheshire Phoenix remained competitive thanks to their three-point shooting and energy on the offensive boards, but they struggled to string together stops when London needed a response. The Phoenix’s late run showed character, yet London’s half-court discipline and free-throw accuracy in the final minute were the difference.

Standout Performers

• Marcus Delaney (London Lions): 24 points, 7 assists, and several key baskets in the fourth quarter.
• Jordan Blake (London Lions): 18 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring the Lions inside.
• Ethan Rowe (Cheshire Phoenix): 21 points and 5 assists, keeping the hosts in contention.
• Liam Carter (Cheshire Phoenix): 14 points and 9 rebounds, providing a strong interior presence.

What It Means

The win gives London Lions a valuable early-season road result and strengthens their position in the British Super League Basketball standings. For Cheshire Phoenix, the loss is a narrow one against a strong opponent, but the late execution will be an area to review as the season progresses. London’s ability to close out a tight game on the road is a promising sign for their title ambitions.
