Leuven Bears Edge Kortrijk in Tight BNXT Battle

Stella Artois Leuven Bears secured a hard-fought 72-69 victory over Kortrijk on October 18, 2026, in a BNXT League game that remained tense until the final possession. Leuven led by a narrow margin for much of the night, but Kortrijk refused to go away and had chances to steal the result late. In the end, the home side's composure at the free-throw line and a few crucial defensive stops made the difference in a game that felt much closer than the final score suggests.

Match Overview

The contest was balanced across the opening three quarters, with neither team able to build a significant lead. Leuven's offense was at its best when the ball moved quickly, while Kortrijk stayed in the game through timely three-point shooting and second-chance points. The quarter scoring showed just how tight the matchup was:

• First quarter: Leuven Bears 18, Kortrijk 16
• Second quarter: Leuven Bears 17, Kortrijk 18
• Third quarter: Leuven Bears 19, Kortrijk 20
• Fourth quarter: Leuven Bears 18, Kortrijk 15

The teams were level at 54-54 entering the final quarter, setting up a finish that demanded execution on both ends. Leuven's 18-15 edge in the last period proved decisive.

Key Moments

Kortrijk took a slim lead midway through the fourth quarter and appeared to have momentum after a contested three-pointer. Leuven responded immediately with a patient possession that ended in a paint touch and free throws. Over the next three minutes, the home side forced two turnovers and converted them into quick points, turning a two-point deficit into a four-point cushion. Kortrijk had one last look to tie the game in the closing seconds, but Leuven's perimeter defense forced a difficult attempt that rimmed out.

Tactical Story

Leuven's half-court offense relied on ball movement and aggressive cuts, especially when Kortrijk switched screens. The Bears also won the battle on the offensive glass, creating extra possessions at critical moments. Kortrijk were effective in transition and used their guards to attack the basket, but they struggled to contain Leuven's interior scoring in the final quarter. Both teams defended with intensity, but Leuven's ability to execute late in the shot clock gave them the edge.

Standout Performers

Leuven's backcourt was central to the win, combining for steady ball-handling and timely shot-making. Their forwards also contributed important rebounds and defensive rotations. Kortrijk received strong performances from their guards, who kept the offense organized and hit several difficult shots. However, Kortrijk's late turnovers and missed free throws proved costly in a game decided by the smallest margins.

Season Impact

The victory is an important early-season result for Stella Artois Leuven Bears in the BNXT League standings, especially because it came against a direct competitor in a tightly packed table. Kortrijk will take encouragement from their competitiveness on the road but will regret not closing out a game they had within reach. Both teams now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures with plenty to review.
